BIG ROAD CONTRACTS
AUSTRALIAN OFFER. A circular to the Good Koads Association of New Zealand, from Messrs Smith, Timms and Kidman, of Adelaide, South Australia, states that the linn is prepared to investigate road construction and maintenance and other construction propositions in New Zealand with a view to puttiny in a bid for any class of work, and to undertake construction on the most modern lines. The firm in question is willinc to assist various local bodies Lu taking; bonds as payment for work instead of cash. The circular let to* adds: We shall he pleased to investigate any construction proposition in New Zealand, and to employ the necessary engineers to prepare data, plant, etc.. especially road construction. II we undertake ■aoJfcflrk, no expense will be spare 1 !- fn*aK;ard to plant equipment and thorough organisation, which we are able to guarantee owing to our long' experience in the carrying' out of public works of large magnitude. Our system has ahvavs been to get through work quick Iv by nutting' a large amount of money on plant units and a large number of men. Mv prineinals have gone fully into the question of good roads problem, and are convinced that the construction of good roads is the work that contractors in a !>'••; way of business should now tackle, owing to the great amount of such work that is now becoming' immed : - ate. Thev are making' arrangements with the Barber Asphalt Paving Co.. of Philadelphia, and other large road firms to sttpplv the latest equipment and material for good road construction. We are aware that there are a considerable number of count'v councils throughout the countrvsiile. whose roads require reconstruction on modern lines, but who are not equipped with necessan' plant, organisation and cash in hand to cope with their work in such a large and expeditious way. Further, the purchase of such a great amount of plant for each county would involve unremunerative expenditure on plants which could otherwise bo dovoted to additional construction. We feel that there should be an oyiportunlity for the various councils to make use of our services and plant afor such road construction work, thus getting' the work done in a much shorter time (in itseT a great advantage) and saving an unremunerative investment in plant." Mr L, M. Sandston. consulting.engineer of Christcburch, is attending' to preliminary arrangements. An Australian representative of the firm will be visiting New Zealand, and will be pleased to give any information required.
