MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The Manukau County Council met at Auckland on Tuesday, when there were present: Crs A. D. Bell (chairman), F. H. Brownhill, A. D. Reid, F. M. Waters, A. E. Hattamy, J. Luke, S. W. House, togetMShvith the engineer (Mr. W. Lopd?«s and the clerk (Mr. Alex Bell). .> Mr. J. T. Dramm, Otahuhn, requested the council to erect a crossing from the road over the drain in front of his property on Kaka Street, for which he would find the drainpipes.—Left to engineer and riding member to inspect. A petition, signed by Mr. A.~ Battensby and four others, ratepayers in the Mangere Riding, requested the council to take the necessary steps to establish a special rating area for the purpose of raising a loan in order to provide them with a supply of water to their residences. It was pointed out that the selling values of the properties totalled £10,500. The request was referred to the Otahuhu Borough Council. , Manurewa Requests The Manurewa Town Board urged the council to complete'the curbing on Great South Road as far* as the present TefvteJs of the road would al-low.--The engineer said the council had carried out the spirit of its resolution. It was not safe to go on any further, because the kerb may be off the permanent levels,—lt was decided to reply to this effect. Unexpended Rates. The Manurewa Board also forwarded the following resolution passed at its meeting on January 26: "That the Manukau County Council be requested to spend the unexpended portion of the council rate, colletted in this district for the curreltJrear, on the county roads in the en strict, thus carrying out the spirit of a vrecent agreement between the board and the council."—lt _ was pointed out that there could be no unexpended money as there was « bank overdraft! It was decided to reply stating the money was being expended as far as was practicable. Manurewa Overhead Bridge.

The Prime Minister, the Right Hon W. F. Massey, forwarded copy of i letter he had sent to the council's solicitors, respecting the Manurewa < overhead bridge loan of £2OOO. He pointed out that in view of the urgency of the matter, the Minister for Finance was prepared to validate the irregularities in the "proceedings taken in connection with the raising of the loan. If the application for the loari, together with the relative •; papers, were forwarded to the intendent of State Advances Office > the proceedings would again be ex-\-amined and submitted to the Crown Law Office for revision. He trusted the State Advances Board would be .ufcle to grant the loan at an early . —Received. Maraetai Wharf The Lands and Survey Department wrote relative to the landing of reserves at Maraetai, and forwarded tracing in order that' the council could mark the place where the fence had been put across tfie creek. ■ —The clerk was instructed to Return the plan showing the position of the . fence. In regard to the removal of shell from the eastern side of the i Maraetai wharf, it was decided to again communicate with the Marine Department, pointing out that damage was still being done to the road, and that several piles in the wharf were loose as a result of the shifting sand.

Alfriston-Papaktira Road. The Minister for Public Works, the Hon. W. Fraser, wrote in reply tp the council's request that the grant of £77 at present allocated for thejF Alfristcn-Wairoa Road, be ted to Alfriston-Papakura Road, stating that he was ybtaining a report in connection with the matter.
