MAJOR GORDON HOVEY, 0.8. E.

REVISITS PUKEKOHE.

A former well-known Pukekoheite, in the person of Major Gordon Hovey, 0.8. E., is at present on a visit to this district, after having returned from active service by the Athenic on Friday last.

Major Hovey, prior to going abroad, was engaged in the motor repair business in Pukekohe, with Mr. J. A. Conirie, in premises now occupied by Messrs. Gallagher, Howe and Moore, lie was also peimanent secretary of the Manchester Unity .of Oddfellows, a vestryman in the Church of England, a vice-president of the Golf Club, member of the Rowling Club, and vice-captain of the Soccer team. He also took a prominent part in social affairs, and was one of the conductors of assembly dances. He was very popular, and held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact. His popularity did not cease after leaving Pukekohe. He left New Zealand with the Main Body as a trooper in the Auckland Mounted Rilles, and soon after he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. A vacancy occurred on the headquarters staff, and Sergeant Hovey was transferred to the stall as sergeant-major. He soon demonstrated that the appointment was fully justified, and 'rapid promotion followed. He was appointed in quick succession to second-lieutenant, lieutenant, captain, and ultimately to major. He was held in the highest esteem by bis superior oiiicers. For a period of two years he was one of General Richardson's staff, and finished up as staff officer to Genera! Godley in Germany. Major Hovey was awarded the 0.8. E. for distinguished services, and was mentioned in despatches. He was also Deputy Assistant Adjutant General of the New Zealand Expeditionary! Force. Major Hovey intends spend-j ing a few days in Pukekohe looking j up old friends.
