Franklin A. &P. Society's 35th Annual Show
EXHIBITS A RECORD. IN NUMBER AND QUALITY. r ====== y WEATHER UNFAVOURABLE.
The sole drawback to the succese j of the first day of the Franklin A. and P. Society's thirty-fifth annuai show, which opened on the society's grounds at Pukekohe to-day, was the weather. For the past two days rain has been falling- intermittently, and last night in fell in torrents. Early tlys morning the sky, though overcast, looked bright enough to raise hopes of a fine day, but at the time of writing (11 a.m.), the heavens are darkly clouded again, and spot> of lain are falling now and again. Hopes are entertained that the weather will clear up before to-morrow, in which case a record attendance is anticipated.
In all sections of the stock the entries are very gratifying indeed, constituting, on the whole, probably a record for the North Island. Even In the rare cases, where the numbers are not exceptional the quality is clearly above the previous average. These remarks apply particularly to the milking Shorthorns (record foi Auckland Province, probably) Jerseys Holsteins, Ayrshires. The beef cattle are the finest lot ever shown in Pukekohe.
The horse entries are also very good, the quality and numbers in the light hacks being a record for the North Island, if not for the Dominion. There are not many draught horses entered, but even these are satisfactory in view of the fact that, owing to motor haulage, draughts have .fallen in value, rind are not now being bred so plentifully. Last year only one stallion put in an appeal - ance, but this year there are four. The- total entries are 2600, a record for the province.
The side shows are more numerous than ever, and, weather permitting, will do a roaring trade. On account of the space required to chronicle the thousands of results, the introduction is necessarily brief, but it would be very ungiateful to omit a meed of praise to the various officials, who, from the president (Mr. J. N. Massev) to the humblest helper, have worked with a will to make the extremely numerous arrangements, necessitating days and weeks of belf-sacrillcinK thought and labour. Only those who have to do such work can understand what it means. In thjs regard we would like particularly to mention the genial, enthusiastic, ever optimistic secretary (Mr. I) R. Hamilton). "Dave," as he is familiarly called, though the busiest of all at or near show time, is always approachable, and his tactful handling of delicate situations and varying temperaments, added to his untiring' zeal and energy, haw; undoubtedly done much to make the entries so line a record in volume—and upon this success depends main- ' ly. In Mrs. Hamilton, the worthy secretary has an excellent helpneet, who has been able to relieve him of a considerable portion of the secretarial work. Another tower of strength is Mr. Jas. Wylie, supervising steward, who, with Messrs. Shipherd, K. Hamilton, Frank Ballard and others have done very creditable work. The Pukekohe Borough Council officials, Mr. W. Wyatt (engineer), Mr. S. Clews (foreman) and assistants, have als r . "iven valuable assistance with the water service and other facilities. IJST OF J1 LICKS AND STEWARDS. Blood Stock.
