THE BENZINE SHORTAGE
dairy farmers' difficulties, milking"by hand, doctors and their duties. The continued shortage of benzine is making the position of many dairy farmers in this district anything but enviable, for many cases of distress could be cited, where hand-milking has had to be resorted to, and the J position is rapidly getting worse..' Further afield things are just as bad as in the Pukekohe district. Speaking to a "Times" representative on Saturday, our Manurewa correspondent stated that some farmers In the Papakura, Manurewa and Clevedon districts were in a pitiable plight, one man, a returned soldier, having to milk 40 cows by band, spending the greater part of his time m the milking shed. It seemed that ■rmers who had cars .to go into Auckland with could get benzine somehow, but the poor unfortunate man who lived far from the railway, and had no car, was at a great disadvantage. Furthermore, some people were riding about in their cars, needlessly using benzines that would be a *• boon to a farmer tf*th milking machines. It is stated that one doctor in this district, being unable to get benzine for his car, rather than have to refuse to go out to attend to patients, hus left the district until the shortage is over. It seems that the Board cf Trade cannot be made to understand that a Pukek<»he doctor may be called on at any moment to motor 20 or 30 miles to visit a stc%_ person, and that horse, traffic is oat '-. . of the question in so scattered a dis- ? c trict. -':
