ELECTRICAL EXTENSION SCHEME
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CRITICISM.
RESENTED BY COUNCIL
LARGER SCHEME ABANDONED
The resolution of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce, re proposed extension of electric current outside the Borough (as published in the "Times") came before the council in a letter from the secretary, Mr. V. S. Roberts, to the Pukekoht Borough Council, on Wednesday night.
The Mayor, in moving that the letter be "received," said that the speeches made at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce cast a direct reflection on the staff, which was grossly unfair. His own opinion was that the staff were doing their best, and in any case the council were quite capable of managing the staff without the aid of the chamber. As for business ability, while the councillors had their defects, nevertheless he believed there was more business ability in the council than could be found in the chamber.
Cr. Patterson endorsed the Mayor's remarks, and said the scheme for going outside ihe borough had been dropped long ago. The council weie not a self-elected body like the chamber, but were elected by the ratepayers. If the discontents of the town wanted to become councillors, ihey were welcome to such—if the ratepayers would elect them. A venomous attack had been made on members of the staff, though Mr. Roadley had retracted somewhat in a letter to the editor of the "Times."
