HOUSING LOAN.

On several occasions during the past few months we have dealt with the housing problem as affecting the borough, fwi we urged the Pukekohe Borough Council to consider the advisability of including a sum for the building of hc.uses in the loan proposals shortly to be submitted. After last meeting of the council we had come to the conclusion that the housing scheme did not appeal to councillors, but we have since learneo that the c ui.cil intends to include a sum, probably £IO,OOO, in the proposals, for the building of houses for workmen in the borough. We are glad to endorse this policy, seemg how the progress of the borough ibeing kept back on account of the shortage ofho'.ses. Such a loan will not lay any burden on the ratepayers, and will not mean any increased rates. The money will be expended as suitable applicants apply for houses, and applicants will pay, through the council, the interest and sinking fund. As far as the ratepayers are concerned, they have no liabilites to meet, and they have the chance of increasing the number of ratepayers to share their general burdens. A similar ban was carried in Te Awamutu, "iily thirty-five persons voting against it, and, presumably, those persons did not understand the question. There should not be the shadow of a doubt about so valuable a proposal being sanctioned in Pukekohe.
