PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD

ADJOURNED MEETING. The adjourned meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held last even* inp, when there were present>J?r. A. W. P. Brookfield Messrs. 1). W. Jones, T. D. CstJ bell, S. Evans, A. Waliis, and the clerk, Mr. A. L. Cooper. An apology for absence was received from Mr. E. D. McLennan.

A Generous Gift.

Mr. Gilbert Wilson, Red Mount, Papakura, wrote stating that as he was shortly leaving New Zealand for England, and as a slight memorial of some very pleasant years spent in the Papakura district, he would piesent to the board, in trust for the public, the old Maori pa, near to where he was residing. He stated that ther? was an area of about 3 acres, securely fenced. There were several spaces which coulibe beautified by the planting of native trees. He imposed a condition that the pa would be forever open free to the public. No portion to be removed, and no bush to be cut down. If the board accepted the offer, he would have the necessary deeds prepared and handed to the board free of cost.—On the motion of Mr Jones, the board accepted the gift on behalf of the ratepayers and It was o'ecided to place on record the board's appreciation of the generous gift. The chairman was instructed to write the donor and express thanks. Mr. Campbell seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Park and Recreation Ground Loan.

The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. W. F. Massey, intimated that he had conferred with the Minister for Finance in regard to the application for a loan of £2OOO for the proposed park and recreation ground. He pointed out that the State Advances Board was without authority to entertain an application from the board, as a park and recreation r.rea was not one of the purposes for which loans could be obtained by 10-. cal authorities from the State Advances Department. Under the circumstances, he regretted that it was not possible for him to forward a favourable reply. In a further letter, Mr. Massey stated with reference to the board's application for the money from the Government Life Insurance Department, that the Minister in charge of the Department was anxious to meet the board, but was unable to do anything at present. The Department charged- 5% ft per cent., whereas the Xown Board '- was permitted to borrow at the rate ' of s*:j per cent. In view of the circumstances, if the board applied to the Government for its consent permitting the board to pay interest on the loan required at the rate of 5 S $ i>er cent., and the Government approves, the Insurance Department - would favourably consider the application. If the board decided to apply for a loan at the higher rate, he j would render whatever assuß&jipet . was possible. ' -*<,- sg With reference to the same natter, the board's solicitors advised that they were making application to the Public Trust Office for the money. On the motion of Mr. Evans, the Minister was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the action taken by him in the matter, and it was decided to apply for Government permission to raise the money at the rite of r>i., per cent, interest, and ' to make application to the Government Insurance Department for a losn of (;200 for the purposes.

Road Metal. The New Zealand Farmers' Fertiliser Company intimated that tbey.* could not supply broken road metal r.t present as they required al! for their own works.—Received.

H.M. Prisons stated that the price charged to local bodies latterly for metal was 6s 3d per cubic yard f.ar .it Mount Eden Prison siding, bat owing to increased cost of materials, it has been deemed necessary to increase the price. They would be prepared to do business with the board in the event of the latter requiring supplies. On the moion of Mr. Jones, secv ended by Mr. Campbell, it was de» cided to obtain a quantity of for patching road purposes. ** ''
