TUAKAU TOWN BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING, (Staff Representative), The monthly meeting of the Tunkau Town Board was held on Tuesday night. Present: Messrs, Dynes Fulton (chairman), J. Pirret, 0. Finch, B. G. Geraghty, G. S. L apwood, W. Barnaby, and James Mungall. George Street. The board's engineer (Mr. J. Jloutly) advised that he had called for tenders for works on George Street. (Advertised in the 'Times.")—Received. Weighbridge. The engineer wrote stating that the inspector of weights and measures had advised him that the weighbridge would not stand the test until the knife and edges, etc., were carefully seen to. However, an expert on these instruments would be in the district shortly, and it would be advisable to engage his services for repairs and adjustments of deli cate parts.—Agreed to have the repairs effected.
Bollard Road.
Re works on Bollard Road, the engineer reported as follows: —"The road, excepting portions graded by myself for the Pukekohe East Road Board, requires regrading for two chains near Tapper's house; for about seven chains starting at the angle from which the road runs between Smeed and Fulton's farms; for eight and a-fifth chains of the steep pinch further on. Another awkward section between Tapper's and C.vr Street would need attention, but this was left for the present." The report went on to state that the footpath from Carr Street to the pines, repairs to metal, regrading, etc., would cost £392. The allocation in the loan for this work w.is £3OO.
The chairman suggested that the Works Committee should inspect the road with the engineer, and decide what portion of the engineer's report should be given effect to. Part would have to be cut out, as the allocation could not be exceeded.—Agreed to, on the motion of Messrs. Barnaby and Geraghty.
Gubb's Entrance.
Farther correspondence appeared in respect to Gnbb'a entrance. The engineer wrote that to make an entrance on the lower side of the section, 9ft 6in between retaining walls, and to of 1 in 11 earthwork to the of 25 cubic yards would be necessary. This, with the concrete retaining walls, would cost £l2 15, less £2 3s for spoils taken for the board's own purposes. H 5 suggested that Mr. Gubb be asked 1o assist with labour at the wide entrance, and that this labour be deeded to be an equivalent for the board's giving the second entrance asked for. No concrete was allowed for the second entrance, therefore this matter would need to be discussed with Mr. Gubb. The chairman did not think a second entrance would be justified. The board had to be careful in setting up a precedent, otherwise larger lend owners might ask for similar or greater concessions. Mr. Gubb certainly did not have a good entrance in the first place. Mr. Mungall submitted that the board could grade the whole of the frontage, and give Mr. Gubb the grade he wanted, and yet pay for the work out of the spoil acquired. The chairman: And set up a precedent for times in which we may not want spoil.
It was decided to write to Mr. Gubb, offering'him an entrance on the lower side of the section, in terms of the engineer's report. The clerk said no reply had been received from his previous letter to Mr. Gubb. Railway Reserve. The district engineer (Mr. D. T. Mcintosh) wrote that the railway reserve at Tuakau was at preent leased to the New Zealand Dairy Association. As the proposed railway arrangements would involve the use of this land for probable railway purposes, the suggestion to transfer the lease and use the site for a soldiers' memorial could not be acceded to.Received. Dangerous Places. Steps were taken towards making repairs to certain places on loads and bridges that were considers! dangerous. Tenders. A special meeting of the board was arranged for Thursday, February 12, to open tenders for George Street work, to receive a reply from •?,fr. Gubb re entrance, report cf Works Committee re Bollard's Road, and any other urgent business.
