TUAKAU, .FAREWELL •MOKE CONCERT, : MS W* —•" (From Our Own Correspondent). Mr. V. J. Fitzpatrick, who ts leav« ing Tuakau, was entertained at a smoke concert in the Taakau Hall on Wednesday, January 21, There was a large attendance of residents of Tuakau and district, In tbe absence of the chairman of the Town Board (Mr. Dynes Fulton). Mr, Jas, Pirret presided The Tout List. The toast list, as follows, was honoured:— The King,—Chairman. "Navy and Army,"—Proposed by Mr, H. Abbott, responded to by Mr, W, Jt Deeble, "Returned Soldiers,"—Mr, F. Woolley, Mr, Sumner, "New Zealand Government,"—Mr. J. Hindman, Mr. Croßsby, "The Allies."—Mr. Geo. S. Lapwood, Mr. H. Rich. "Red Cross Nurses."—Messrs, Pirret and S. Black. "New Zealand Labour Party."— Mr. H. Abbott, Mr, F. Denner. "The Visitors."—Mr, J. Pirret, Mr, H*. V. Gribble,
"The Ladies."—Messrs. Bell and Sottervllle. The toast of "Our Guest" was en» trusted to Mr. Pirret, who spoke In glowing terms of Mr. Fitzpatriek as a citizen and as a hotelkeeper. He eulogised his work during the influenza epidemic, and regretted his departure from the district. As a mark, of appreciation, and the esteem in which he was held, he presented which he was held. He presented Mr. Fitzpatriek with a case of pipes, amid applause. Messrs. Crossby, Deeble and H. Rich endorsed Mr. Pirret's remarks, while testimony was added by Mr. Gardner, on behalf of Mercer residents, and Mr. L. Canton, for Port Waikato's friends. Wr* Mr. Fitzpatriek, in reply, returned thanks, and said he had only accomplished what he had considered his duty to Tuakau. During the ceremony items were rendered by Messrs. W. T. Jones, H. Gribfcle, Lovell, Deeble, J. Pirret, Bell, Gardner, S. Black, H. Rich, J. Fraser and V. J. Fitzpatriek. A most successful function terminated about 1 a.m.
Statutory Half-Holiday. 'X. A special meeting of the Tuakau Town Board was held- on Tuesday night, Mr. Jas. Pirret presiding in the absence of the chairman, Mr. Dynes Fulton. On the motion of Messrs. Lapwood and Mungall, it was agreed that Wednesday be fixed as the statutory half-holiday. MAUKU. BUSINESS CHANGE. A further alteration has been effected in the management of the Mauku Stores. Messrs. W. J. Girvie and B. C. Ward have entered into partnership, with every intention of laying themselves out to meet, all the requirements of the numerous pat--rons of the. stores. ' j """ They certainly would seem to be hi a fair way to accomplish this end, having installed a motor delivery ancf service, of whioi can be had by applying to the store, or by perusal of th<wfirm's handbills.
