PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Monthly Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday night. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. K. Lawrie), G. H. Armstrong, H. Keith, A. P. Daysh. K. McGough, F. J. Morrow, J. Patterson, R. Bilkey, the clerk (Mr. F. J. Dean), and the foreman (Mr. S. Clews).

Notice was given by the health inspector that a certain insanitary building must be removed. The Mayor and chairman of the Works Committee were deputed to wait on the Postal Department with a view to asking them to lay their cables underground instead of the present unsightly fixtures overhead. Also, to protest aginst the proposed stoppage of the Pukekohe Hill and Cape mail deliveries. The Mayor and councillors deplored the fact that nothing definite had yet been done in reference to the loan proposals, especially in regard to the electric lighting extenions, To expedite matters, and bring things to a head, it was arranged that a special meeting be held on Wednesday week. Cr. Patterson said that if there was an election to the Licensing Committee, th# council would be obliged to finartoe it. This would cost £350, to which other local bodies would have to contribute. The clerk said that if there was a contest the cost would swallow up all hotel license fees for the next two years. It was usually possible to avoid an election.

Cr. A. P. Daysh referred to the blockage of traffic in the streets by vehicles standing about for an inordinate length of time. Crs. remarked that the speed of motors was excessive.

On the motion of Cr. McGough, it was decided to enforce the by-law, as from Manukau Road railway bridge to Dell's Corner. Under the by-law, vehicles must not stand unattended.

Cr. Patterson wanted to know when the scoria was to be completed' on Prospect Terrace. —Referred to Storks Committee. '
