The annual "smoker" of the Puke-; kohe Volunteer Fire Brigade will be held in the Premier Hall on Wednesday, January 28. The proprietors of "Vermont" and ' Kosedale" Dairies publish an announcement in another column, stating the prices at which milk and cream will be delivered by them in Pukekohe, as from February 1.. Holiday excursion tickets will be issued on January 29, Anniversary Day, available to February 18; also, a train will leave Pukekohe at 8.33 am. for Hamilton, leaving Hamilton for the return at 5.10 p.m—See advt.

"Money tells," and "The liberal soul shall be made fat," are two well-known quotations. The Jersey breeders and well-wishers have be gun to realise this fact. Mr. Claud Rountree, of Bucklancl, realises that the children must be induced to interest themselves in the breeding of cattle, so he generously donates a five-guinea cup to be competed for by school children in the Jersey classes. For conditions see our advertising columns. We congratulate Mr. Rountree on his public spirit. Ha is a new arrival here from Te Kuiti. We could do with some more live wires like him to electrify some of the mental stagnation that is noticeable hereabouts.

Miss J. E. Moroney, teacher of pianoforte, Manurewa, intimates in an an announcement commencing in this issue, that she is prepared to receive pupils at Papakura.—See advertisement for directions. The president of the Pukekohe Bowling 'Club, Mr. H. Bockett, has intimated to the Rev. J. F. Martin that a number of bowlers will attend, with the friends of the late Mr. C. Monty Wright, at the Divine service at the Methodist Church on Sunday evening next. The Rev J. F. Martin will conduct the service.

Those interested are requested to note that the annual smoke concert and preentation of caps to the Pukekohe Football Club's junior 15 winners of Franklin Rugby Union's Junior Championship, will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall, on Wednesday Jaanuary 28. When being cross-examined at the Magistrate's Court on Thursday, a female Vitness said she remembered the goods supplied to someone belonging to defendant's family, but to the exact person she could not recollect. The Magistrate thereupon retorted, "She could not remember which person to whom she supplied the goods, but possibly if tKfe customer had been a young man she would have remembered!" (Laugh' ter.)

On Thursday evening, January 15,1 the members of Lodge Pukekohe M.U., 1.0.0.. F., and Lodge Excelsior, 1.0.0. F., N.Z., met at Mr Armstrong's billiard saloon for a snooker tournament. A very good game was played, in which Lodge Pukekohe had the best of it, winning by 82 points. The honour of the highest score resulted in a tie between Bro. F. Duncan (Lodge Excelsior) and Bro. W. Blake (Lodge Pukekohe). In the final play-off Bro. Blake was victor with a score of 18.

On Tuesday evening last a party of members of Lodge Excelsior 1.0.0. F., M.U., paid a visit to Waiuku for the purpose of taking part in the installation of officers. Bro. Armiger, District Deputy for Auckland, accompanied the party and prepared the ceremony, assisted by various visiting brothers.

During the course of a defended civil action at the Court yesterday when the wife of a defendant •tated she disputed several amounts on the account, she was asked by the Magistrate why she did not have the account corrected. The witness replied, "When I wanted to, he would never stand and let me have it out with him. He would always run off to speak to a commercial traveller or someone else." The Court shook with laughter.

Further attention is drawn to the screening of "Hearts of the World" at the Premier Hall on Tuesday next The public will be well advised to serve seats at "The Bookery." This is an unusual attraction, and is likely to draw a big attendance.

A Pukekohe young man, Mr. Clary Adams evidently possesses the power of divining water sources precisely, having located exactly, the presence of water on Mr. Robert Fitness's property, Pukekohe, at a depth of 39ft. The results of the bore are very satisfactory indeed.

Local bowlers are subscribing t-> wards a memorial to the late Mr Monteith Wright.

The secretary of the Clevedon v A and P. Society (Mr. J. Gandy) states that, judging by the entries he has received up to date, the total for this year wilL be a record. It is pleasiing to note that the Clevedon and Franklin societies work in harmony, and endeavour to assist each other in various ways. The Clevedon A. and P. Show will be held on February 7, when a full report will appear in the "Times."
