ROAD WORKS IN RAGLAN

County Engineer's Report

At the ordinary meeting of.the Raglan County Council, held at Ngaruawahia on Wednesday last, the engineer, Mr. J. W. Civil, reported on the following works done since last meeting.

Port Waikato Riding*

Port Waikato to Tuakau Bridge Road.—Taylor and party have completed the st6ne work near Pakaa and have made a start with the road plant and horses on the nine-mile • section, and the work is progressing favourably. Tenders were called for contract No. 416 for forming 60 chains of swamp road on the eightmile section, and for contract No. 415 for forming some 40 chains of siding on the 12-mile section. Lucken's and Godfrey's tender for both contracts were accepted, viz., £604 10s for contract Noj. 416, and £195 14s 4d for contract No. 415. The contractors arrived this week ready to start the works. Omwhero Riding. Turner's Junction to Watson's Gate, Grant £2ooo.—The letter received from the Under-Secretary of Public Works, before this meeting, which states that the £2OOO straight- • out grant still holds good. Hamilton's Deviation, Metalling.— Contract has been let to J. Singleton for carting metal at 7s 8d per cubic yard, the work to be started at the end of this week. Hunter's Deviation.—J. York has made a start on his contract, and has the work well in hand now. Surfacework has been carried out on various roads. Putakawa Riding. Pukekawa to Bregmen's Landing Road.—l regret to say that D. Terpey has been delayed in starting this work, but expects to be on the > ground at the end of this month. I have ordered 150 pipes, which have been landed at the Pungapunga Landing. Surfacework and repairs have been carried out on various roads. WHangape Riding. Tuakau Bridge to Waingaro Road. —Contractors Marston, Owen and Kernohan have practically completed the breaking of metal at Awaroa, and expect to commence breaking of metal at Sorboy's Quarry next week. Repairs have been carried out on various roads by the surfacemen. Glenmurray Wharf.—The crane at wharf has been fixed to suit requireinentg.
