VALEDICTORY AND PRESENTATION

MR AND MRB CRAWFORD AND PAMIL?

Wednesday, the 14 th inet. will be a day long to be remembered ly the residents of Onewhero. The afternoon and evening being entirely taken up with the farewelling of Mr and Mrs 8. H Crawford and family. Mr 8. H. Crawford who is Councillor for the Onewhero riding of the Raglan County, owing to his recent severe illness, was unable to accept a public function, which was a sad disappointment to the ratepayers of the districts. Consequently a representative deputation waited on Mr and Mrs Crawford at their residence.

Mr N. Cole Baker, in making the presentation, paid a high trbiute to Mr Crawford's ability and public spirit, coupled with unremitting zeal in carrying out the difficult and often thankless duties pertaining to his office during his twelve years of tenure. - Mr Keyes, Mr Allen, and Attewell endorsed the previous remarks, and all agreed that Mr Crawford's administrative ability was so great that they felt sure his successor would have no easy task to follow in 'his wake. On behalf of the ratepayers of the district, Mr or presented Mr Crawford with" audsome gold watch, suitably inscribed as a token of appreciation of his services, with their best wishes for his future success and happiness. To Mrs Crawford, who had endeared herself to all in the district, a silver entree dish, suitably inscribed, was presented. Mr Crawford thanked the deputation, on behalf of Mrs Crawford and himself, for the tangible expression of appreciation that had been presented to them that day, and feelingly remarked that while he had only done his duty as Councillor for the district, it was extremely jnritifjinc AjfejlW *h"t whKe ha had' only donehwauty as Councillor for the district, it was extremely gratifying to know that his honest efforts on their behalf were so gratefully acknowledged. SUCCESS IN PUBLIC LIFE Incidentally' Mr Crawford has had a wonderfully unique career. During his thirty-two years of public life, he has held office on licensing committees, road board, county councils, and school committees, and never on any occasion has he suffered defeat at an election, which is undoubtedly a great record. TRIBUTE TO THE LADIES Later in the day, the ladies of the dittct tendered an " afternoon " in thb hall, to Mrs and Miss Rita Crawford, providing a pleasing musical programme, after which the indispensible cup of tea and refreshments were handed round. - The singing of " Auld Lang Syne "all present joining hands, concluding a very pleasant time. SOOIAL AND DANCE In the evening a social and dance was held in the hall, to take farewell of Mr Fred and Miss Rita Crawford, two of the most popular and highly esteemed young people in the district. THE JUVENILES The younger fry, chums of Master Ivan Crawford, taking their lead from their elders, presumably, organised their forces, and marched in a body to the residence of Mr Craw-

ford in the evening, and explained that their mission was to make Ivan a parting gift. They were duly escorted to the drawing room, and having elected the oldest of tnei number as spokesman, tte presentation, which consisted of a pocket book, pencil and purse combined, was made with all due decorum, the young recipient duly respondingSome of this party, being musically endowed, played a few selections on the piano, finally striking up the National Anthem, the whole company singing with gusto. The universal opinion freely expressed was that the departure of Mr and Mrs Crawford and family will be a loss decidedly hard to replace.
