ROAD WORKS IN FRANKLIN

County Engineer's Report

Taurangaruru Top Road and Others.—Considerable improvement* have been made to the Taurangaruru Top Road, Kaihau's Road and Ifakgill's Road, Waipipi . Riding. These roads were in bad repair and now have been regraded and put in good order. Mifeion Bush and McElwain's Roads, Glenbrook.—The spawling contract on McElwain's road has been completed. The contract on Mission Bush Road is still in progress. When the latter is completed arrangements should be made to have the metal crushed and roads metalled Tramway Road to Cameron Town.-The work of iorming a portion of this road has now been definitely started and will be completed in time to enable the spawls at present in Coughlan's Quarry to be carted out in good time to be made use of for road purposes this summer. Carting Contract.—A contract has been let to Messrs McSheen Bros, for winding, carting and stacking the spawls from Coughlan's Quarry, Pukekohe West Riding. The spawls are to be delivered and stacked on Rogers Road opposite C.unty Reserve. Supply and Delivery of Spawls at Landings, Mauku Riding - Three contracts were let some time ago totalling 10500 cubic yards of spawls, up to the present very poor progress has been made, and unless the contractor increases his plant the metalling of roads under the Karaka Waiau Loan will be considerably delayed. Steps should be taken to compel the contractor to increase his output ensure the completion of scontracts ih $ reasonable time. Road At Buckland Dairy Factory. —Work on this portion of road is now nearing completion. The level of the road, however will not suit the alteration to the Dairy Factory. Some expenditure will be necessary cn the part of the Dairy Company before the embankment in front of factory will be safe for traffic Edward's ford, Hunua.—Pile driving has been done and jNog ford made in the Wairoa Stream at Hunua to give access to Edward's farm. This work is of a solid nature, and should make a permanent and safe crossing. - Great South Road, Papakura Run-ciman.—Ro-forming and metalling still under way on this road, owing to the dry weather experienced the portioSs newly metalled are rough, the rolling done having very little effect on the metal. Later on bowever the improvement* made will be more noticeable. County teams plant.—The teams plants are busily engaged on road formation works. Four extra horses were purchased during the month, the No 1 plant now has eight horses and the No. 2 plant six horses. Crushing plant.—The No. 1 plant is crushing in the Pukekohe East district and can be kept busy crushing small lots of stone till the machinery is available to handle the large quantity of atone on the Patumahoe Waiau Road. Beach Road, Papakura.—The ratepayers on this road have been anxious for some time regarding improvemente required to be done. On the 11th inst. the Riding member and myself made an inspection of the road and interviewed the chief settlers interested, and would recommend that during the present summer the road be formed on one side and brought to a uniform level with the present metal road. The Council's No. 2 teams plant will be available for this work. A portion of this road is a boundary road between the Papakura Town Board and the County. I would suggest that the Board be asked to contribute half the cost ojj making the necessary improvements. Roading of Oaklands Estate, Papakura.—Plans and specifications have been received for the formation of roads in the above estate for the consideration of your Council. The proposals provide for roads of 30 feet in width with culverts where required. It is proposed to form at the present time only the road under No 1 contract marked on accompanying plan Engineering Surveys have been made of access roads to sections 13, 70, 12 and 13 Hunua Parish and portion of Patumahoe Waiau and Waiau Papakura roads. Aka Aka to Otaua Road- —This road at the present time is exceedingly rough for the greater portion of its length and should receive some attention as soon as possible. What is required is the metal removing, the road reforming and metal replaced, also a light coat of fine metal to give a smooth surface. I would suggest that if the necessary stone can be procured for this purpose that the reconstruction of this road be put in hand at an early date. The government subsidy appearing on this years estimates of £2OO £1 for £1 could no doubt if made available be used for this work. Waiuku to Waipipi Road.—This road is rough and bably formed and should be treated in a similar manner to that suggested for the Aka Aka to Otaua road. An engineering survey would be required, I would suggest that this j be done and the necessary data furnished to place before ratepayers interested with the object of raising a loan to reconstruct and metal the road to the Waiuku Town Board boundary. 1 might mention that a Government subsidy of £/>OO £1 for £1 appears on the 1919-1920 estimates for this road. Should half the amount required for the work be raised by sq>e..inl loan no doubt it would bo subsidised f>v the Government on a £l for £1 basis. ' Proposed New Bridge Waiuku I)iury Road Mauku Stream.- Up to ; the [ireueiit, lime lias rx.t ppni'.i'ted of sections of the cieek being taken ■ and the securing of the necessary,

data to give au estimate of the amount required to construct a concrete bridge. Before deciding on the dimensions of the bridge required it will be necessary to decide whether the small creek connecting with the Main Stream at the eastern approach to bridge is to be diverted, if this is done a shorter span bridge coud be erected. A full report trill be placed before your Council at next meeting on this matter giving the estimated cost of the work proposed to be done. Other'matters referred to me for report will receive the earliest possible attention.—The report was adopted.
