Engineer's Report

The Engineer, Mr W J. reported as follows, at the last meet-** ing of the Manukau County Council: Mangere Riding—A considerable amount of work has been carried out * in this riding, in cleaning weeds from reserves; attending to faulty water meters, and general maintenance works. The following roadk have received attention: Walmsley apd Mountain Road corner has been widened with 12 yards ot scoria, an extention of the existing culvert will further improve this cornOT, when the pipes are BuckUnd Road has been blinded with a tether four yards of scoria but t 9 recent dry spell of weather has prevented it from getting satisfactorily. Oruarangi Road has been patched using 80 yards of econa. Creamery Road has received 24 yards of scoria. Water Works 12 Kent meters have been received and two returned. Quarrying Buctfjought and Co. are proceeding slowly with the quarrying at the Springs. Pakuranga Riding. Ho * lc * Main Road. A portion of aide track along this road hai boen graded for summer use. The well at Howick has been completed and a windless attached for the convenience of the. public. I have inspected the "tone Crushed at Pakuranga by T. L. Sflmith and assessed the amount at 3* yards as outside measurement, ani have pot through a voncher for thai quantity at 3s 6d per yard. A Maim will,be male for the Government grant as early as possible. Alfriston-Papakura Roa<l. A start has been made with the counter-sinking of on this road to bring it the portion recently done. As this work * has to be done by hand it is some- <j. , what expensive, but it is the only ' . way to make a satislactory job of it. Aitkenhead's Road has beea watertabled and cleaned. Tamaki Road The hill by Kennel's Bridge , has been regraded and the dangerous portion of the road near the ' bridge^widened. When the new concrete bridge is erected it Will greatly impure this portion of the road. O'Harl Road has been partly graded. A |rial was carried out with the Saanderson Tractor which was satisfactory under the circumstances. Tne road will be completed this week. Turanga Rfnng —The plans and estimates for several deviations on the Maraetai Road has been prepared. As soon as a meeting of the settlers interested xm be. convened, the proposed scheme can be placed before them, of raising a loan to enable us to lift theWoV ■ ernment grant offered for this work. I understand that Goodman is doing preliminary work in regards to the homestead bridge. Cow bridge.—The pipes have been put in and he inlet and outlet cu>; the old bridge has yet to be removed and theereek filled up and widened at tne oorner. Wairoa Riding.—Foreman Peterson and his gang have completed the Clevedon-Brookby Road and have made a good job of same. Mataitai Road.—The fillings at Shaw'a. has been backed up and the metal napped and blinded: also the stone facings to the culvert have been done Several other jobs have been attended to on this road. Four planks have been put in on bridge on Ness Valley Ro.ad. George Munro is proceeding to the Orere contracts this week. I aiu going out with him on Thursday to lay the culverts. QENt'HAIi Ro the purchase of motor tractor After a satisfactory trial with the" Sanderson tractor, (lie outfit was purchased for £6. f >o plus about £3O for spare parts, a list of which wil) be furnished by Mr Kidd. I have inspected the spare parts and fiud that they are all wearing parts whi' h will be required sooner or later I have engaged a driver, L. Mackay, who has started out with the plaut Mr Harding of the Public Works Department invited me to go through the estimates and sort out those th*t will be required for this season's work. As instructed I paid a dying visit to Dannevirke and inspected the Anderson Hopper. I found that it was in good order and The Rotary Screen and Sohutes had been removed to a stationary/outfit. Theai paiis are to lie replaced with new ones made by (\>llet t and Sons. They have agreed to fix the plant out with an attached elevator, similar to the one on their own plant at an additional cost of £7O, which makes the pl.nt complete at Dannevirke at £520. The telephone has bean installed in my house and the No. is 27 Otahuhu Exchange. Building permits amounting to £5281 have been issued during the V month. .
