Fire Brigade Reports
Sib,—The remarks appended to your report of the lute fire at Messrs Cooper and Curd's premises, somewhat seems to cast a slur upon the lo.al Brigade for not reporting same to your paper. It is not the policy of Pukekohe's Fire Brigade to seek notoriety. Its members are all volunteers for fire prevention and saving destruction of property When that work h done, like all true men, they retire to their own private occupations with the feeling of satisfaction that always follows the doing of good work in any part of life. N. L. BROWN, Captain P.V.F.B. i SjunJs all very lofty and " high falutin," but it does not square with practical life. The work of the Brigade is not private, but public, and all such institutions,-in every part of the Empire (except in Pukekohe) observe the usual courtesies to the preee, realizing that the press cau assist, in a general way, to harmonise the relationships of the various public bodies with the communities they serve. In any case, officials generally recognise that it is better to ensure accurate information being published than to leave openings for the unintentional dissemination of incorrect news —Ed. F. and P.
