FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL.

Annual Meeting.

Continued from Tuesday.)

The Public Works Department wrote stating that the Minister would issue authority for £4OO (£ for £), towards the erection of a new bridge on the Clevedon to Hunua Road, in place of the bridge washed away.— Received with thanks and left to Cr Lockwood and engineer. The Waiau branch of the F.U. wrote requesting the Council to open a new road down to the good landing on Mr Norman Clark's property, lot -13, Waiau parish. Such would prove very beneficial. A. Smyth, on behalf of the settlers on Pilgrim Road, Mauku, drew the Council's attention to the deplorable state of the road.—Left to Cr Montgomerie and engineer to report. Arthur Symthe requested repairs to Pilgrim road, Mauku.—Left to Cr Montgomerie and the engineer to take action, the former stating that the road was in a deplorable state. John Hill and J. Robertson wrote re deviation opening up a new road to a good landing on Norman Hill's (now Anderson's) property. Mr Anderson said the road would not benefit him, but he would sell onetenth of an acre for £2O.

The Councillors were vastly amused at the offer of such land at the rate of £2OO per acre! The matter was left to Cr Keith to arrange a conference with a view to securing unity among those concerned. Until a definite plan was mutually agreed upon by the settlers, the i Council could do nothing and Or Keith was opposed to forming a road through a swamp (30 chains) and would rather see the road to the river repaired. Robert Munro, on behalf of the Pokeno memorial committee, applied for permission to clean up the part of the Market Square which the Council allotted them for the erection of a Fallen Soldiers' Memorial, which is to take the form of a suitable obelisk of granite.—Granted. Pare Kaiaro, Mercer, requested the Council to attend to a drain placed across the road near his place, which diverts the water into his property, and consequently floods his farm at Mangatangi.— Left to engineer. Advices were received that £SO (£ for £) would be granted for Quinn road, and also £IOO for Pakington-Mauku road, [£ for £) as soon as satisfactory proposals were submitted to the Public Works' Department. J. Wilson and C. Ludurg, Whangarata, complained of the weeds overgrowing the road running from Whangarata to Tuakau via Dominion road.—Decided to order adjoining owners to remove the weeds.

J. Hogan, H. A Svendsen and six others subscribed £l2 towards cost of survey with a view to straightening and deepening Faerata creek.—Survey to be proceeded with.

A footbridge near the outlet of the Maungatawhiri Stream, for the convenience of school children, was asked for by Mr W. Q. Reynolds, Pokeno.—Cr Wilcox to report.

A petition signed by every ratepayer in the Wiriwiri area for a loan of £BSO was received. The cleik expressed his indebtedness to Messrs W. J. King and Fenwick for their work in getting the petition signed A special order for a loan of £6OO for Smeed's road, Tuakau, was passed. Mr H. E. R. L. Wily led a deputation asking for completion of the metalling of road from Waiuku main road to Glenbrook station. The chairman said there was a grant of £2OO, {£ for £) on the Estimates, for that work. Mr Wily said the people living to the south of the road would benefit much more largely than the actual petitioners. The chairman said Or R. T Reid was against metalling out of rates. It would have to be done by loan.

Mr Wily asked if there was an amount available from the sale of the tramway road. The clerk: Yes, a small amount probably. One of the deputation said he did not think ihe Council had spent a fiver on the flat portion ot the road during the past eighteen years. He would assist with a team and a man.

It was questioned whether it would not be better to go in for the larger scheme mooted some time ago.—Decided that a sub-committee confer with the parties interested and report at next meeting. Mr Wiley added that he did not think there was any chance of the proposal for the more ambitious scheme being carried by the ratepayers, an opinion from which Or Montgomerie differed. A deputatition consisting of Messrs H. E. R. L Wily, Goodwin, Barriball andGuely waited on the Council, asking that Bogue's road, Aka Aka, be completed. This work was commenced some considerable time ago, the Council doing the formation work and the Aka Aka Drainage Board putting clay spoil out of the parallel drain on the crown. The formation had not been completed, and this was hanging the arrangement up, as the drains could only be cleaned during the summer, when the water was low.

The engineer was instructed to proceed with the formation. A letter was received from the Farmers' Union, Franklin Sub-pro-vincial Executive, protesting against melal being put on theroais without blinding, Cr Montgomerie considered that many roads could be made good enough by scarifying and blinding. Advice was received that the application for a loan of £IO,OOO for roading in Awhitn, was granted, currency of the loan to be 36J years Resolvtd that a poll of the ratepayers ba taken. The Public Works Department agreed to the proposal for 13$ miles of formation and culverting Manga-

tangi-Miranda and Kaiana roads, the Government's liability not to exceed £1,900, this the balance of two items of £I,OOO each on the estimates this year.—Received. "Is there any prospect of metal being put on the section of the public road passing through my property?" asked C. Davis, of Ramarama.—Replied no funds available this season. It was decided that the common seal of the Council be affixed to the dedication of roads in the Ostrich Farm Estate, on payment of the sum of £2,000 in cash, and on the understanding being given by the directors of the company that a further £2()0 be paid within six months from the date of the dedication. On the motion of Cr J. 8. Montgomerie, the engineer was instructed to have an estimate for the cost of putting a road tnrough Glasson's and Urquhart's property.
