THE DILWORTH HERD.
RECORD SALE. PEDTCtREE STOCK DISTRICT PURCHASES An important dispersal sale of pedigree milking Shorthorn stock of the Dilworth School of Agriculture, took place at Papaioetoe on Monday, the auctioneers being Messrs. Alfred Buckland and Sons, in conjunction with the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd. There was an exceptionally large attendance of buyers from all parts of the Island, and throughout, the sale the competition was keen, and bidding very spirited. It is hardly necessary to deal with the quality of the stock, as the herd is well known throughout New Zealand. Buyers from Buckland, Waiuku, Waipipi and Tuakau, purchased freely, and as a result, some good pedigree strains have found new homes in ihe district, which is not only an acquisition, but should materially better the class of siock in and around Pukekohe. Such higlilybred siock scattered around a district tends to enhance the values of herds, and induces a better general level of breeding.
THE BULLS. MARLBOROUGH OF DARBALARA. The principal bull was Marlbrough of Darbalara, No. 110, N.Z.M.5.H.8., calved October, 1913, which was purchased by Mr. Parkinson, of Opotiki. This magnificent Shorthorn was got by Emblem of Darbalara, out of that well-known highly-bred cow, Champion 111., of Darbalara. His grandsire was the great foundation bull, Banker, and his granddam was Champion. His sire, Emblem, is the most famous milking Shorthorn bull in the Southern Hemisphere to-day. Included in his female progeny, alfr of which are great producers, is the champion milking Shorthorn of the world, Melba VII. of Darbalara, whose semi-official record is 102Hlbs. butter. Marlbrough's dam, Champion 111. of Darbalara, was the winner at the Sydney Royal Show. 1914, of the special prize given by "The Sydney Morning Herald and Mail," for the cow giving the highest yield under test by the Department of Agriculture in New South Wales, in 273 days, in which time she yielded 5631b5. of butter. In order to show the great constitution of the strain, Marlborough's grand-dam, Champion, under a semi-official test, when 19 years of age. yielded in 273 days 10*3761b5. of milk, and 4461b5. of butter, which is probably a world's record at that age. The price paid for this great bull bv Mr. Parkinson was 650gns. i Emblem of Pukerimu. Another noted bull is Emblem of Pukerimu, which was calved in August, 1917, and who appears in Vol. 111. N.Z.M.S.H.B. He is by Lilac's Prince of Pukerimu, out of Bessie IV. of Darbalara (imp.). His grandsire is Lilac V. (imp.), and his grand-dam is Bessie 11. (No. 817 a). Emblem is of pure Darbalara blood on both sides, and is descended from that great bull Emblem of Darbalara. through Radium. His dam. Bessie TV., dropped her first calf- only one month from her arrival from Australia, but yet she yielded 3301b5. of butterfat, His grand-dam, under semi-official test in New South Wales, on pasture only, yielded 6581b5. of butterfat.
Although these bulls are not coming to this district, we give the above for the benefit, of dairy farmers, and io show that, the descendants from these sires who have found their homes here, are highly-bred animals. Tt is quite superfluous to further emphasise their many undeniable qualities.
