LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Sir —Since reading Mr Wily's reply to mine in your issue of the 25th inst. we have been laughing so much as to be unable to steady our hand sufficiently to write. To think that Mr Wily, who we all know thinks himself a very smart man, should be so dense as not to be able to see that the gentleman who proposed that " Mr Wily should speak for Mr Massey throughout Franklin" was simply pulling his leg, as we were when we suggested that he should be sent throgh the Dominion. Why, Mr Wily must be more dense than a London fog. As to the dissemination of the " Reform " platform, we have little objection, seeing that it has been stolen from the Liberals, who, by the way, have never changed their name. They were always Democrats, always Re formers, always Progressives. What we are afraid of is not the written policy, but that quite a lot of the measures mentioned in it will not be introduced to the House. Pope says •' We cannot argue but from what we know " and most logicians acknowledge this to be so. Well, what do we know of the Premier's promises r Take a few of the last elections: Abolition of the 10 per cent Mortgage Tax. Elective Legislative Council. Revision Tariff (Customs) To give every man a piece of tho freehold. To keep the necessities of life from rising. To see that the country had a £1 worth for a £ 1. To put the Maori land question straight, etc etc. We had better stop, or we could almost fill your paper. Surely the Premier ought to be had up for breach of promises instead of being allowed to give his constituency the slip by the advice of a few of his supporters One would have thought he would have had more sense than to have acted on it for the second time. M. J. ROGERS Pukekohe West, Ist Dec. 1919.
