ELECTION BALLADS.
No. 2. I am the very model of a modern Labour Candidate, I've got the patter off by heart, both ancient, modern, and to date ; My propaganda's wonderful, my speech needs no apology, And, best of all, I spout it out in legal phraseology.
When Lawriegrabbed the Mayor's chair I could afford to smile at it, I knew I'd shine in politics when but a little while at it. When Piggott forms his Cabinet, and ready now the men are all— I'll be the very model of a new AttorneyGeneral.
I've learned the Labour platform, and I'll do my best to lollow it, Although at first, I must confess, I found it hard to swallow it; But now I am persuaded that its right beyond all ques-ti-on, And even grabbing all the land won't give me indiges-ti-on.
If the good souls of Manukau will listen t'j my oratory They'll find themselves transmuted in the fires of my " Labour "ato'y, And if I tie myself up in a knot beyond unravelling They'll credit me with meaning well, without misdoubt or cavilltng.
You cannot steer the Ship of State right while you hold the tiller wrong; But Piggott to the resoue came and showed how Joe and Bill are wrong. They stole his planks to make a raft in hopes they might escape on it. But it will not support them, for they'll put too much red tape on it.
Bethink you well how prime a swell I'll be in drafting out a bill, I'll decorate the Statute Book with unknown ornament and frill; With Piggott's pate to legislate and mine to add the quip and quirk, We'll have a code of laws to load the Courts with everlasting work.
If I should write for half the night I really should not half be done, I'll leave the rest, and all the best, until I get to Wellington ; But this I vow, though up to now of our commandments ten are all, There shall be more by many a score when I'm Attorney-General.
