PUKEKOHE'S HOUSING PROBLEM.
KaIRI.Y satisfactory legislation in regard to the provision of workers' homes, through the instrumentality of the municipal authorities, is now on the Statute book. Under this Act a person may secure his own liouse by payment of £ I' > deposit. the balance to be paid within a period of not less than :s<l years lor a building mainly of wood, and M';? for one of concrete. T<> be yble to take advantage ot this new act, an applicant iim-t not, unless he h;i> more than two children, be receiving an income d more than 1"'2.0 per year. £2O extra ii allowed lor each child or dependant beyond two, provided that the total amount does not exceed £isoo. 111 view of the glaring shortage of houses in Pukekohe, the shockingly high prices being asked and received for existing buildings, wo sincerely trust that the Pukekohe Borough Council and branklin County Council will peruse this Act. and lake steps, by way of inviting applicants, towards prevailingoll the Housing Board to erect several dwellings in I'ukekohe. A public man cou'd hardly do a better service to the community he represents 1
than to make himself instrumental in having now houses erected. Whatever his failings might be, such an one would have the satisfaction of knowing in his own heart that he had hoeii of service to the present generation of married persons, and the younger ones coming to marital age. The buildings would be paid for, and the individuals and the community at large would reap lasting direct and indirect benefits. We await with interest some definite proposal on the above linos.
