We understand that a local business man is intending to build five concrete houses, for sale, in Edinburgh street. Through his horse bolting, while riding from Mercer to Tuakau yesterday, Father O'Brien was unseated, but luckily escaped with a severe shaking.
It is stated that an effort was made to induce Brigadier G. S. Richardson to contest the Franklin seat in the Liberal Party's interest, but without success.
Buckland's adjourned Peace celebrations sports will be held on Saturday, November 15th, for which a pood programme has been prepared. Particulars are advertised.
On account of pressure on our space, Scrutator's article on Chautauqua is held over to-day, but this splendid company, which is to visit Pukekohe from November 4th to 10th inclusive, is referred to in our leading columns to-day Picture patrons' attention is drawn to the notices in this issue relating to a super feature screening to take place at the Premier Hall on Monday, November 3rd, when America's great horseman actor, Tom Mix will appear in " Mr Logan U.S.A."
The Waiuku firm of land agents, Messrs W. J. King and J. D. Chalmers, have now increased the partnership by the inclusion of Mr H. O. Mellsop The firm (which has a replace advertisement for Waiuku properties in this issue) is now styled Messrs King, Mellsop and Chalmers. The third annual Home Industrial Exhibition and Flower Show, in aid of St Paul's Church, Buckland, will be held in the Buckland Hall on November 7th and November Bth. A special feature of this year's show will be the children's exhibits. It has been arranged that the children can attend the opening day free of charge. On Tuesday, November 2Hh, tho monthly finance meeting of the Franklin County Council will be held, and on Wednesday 26th, both tho ordinary monthly meeting and annual statutory meetings will take place. When Tom Mix hoard that hie latest photoplay, which will be shown at the Premier Hall, on Monday, November •), was to be called " Mr Logan, IJ.S.A " he smiled and said: " This will be the first time anyone called me Mr. I remember ye.irs ago working for a company and when thev would call the roll, ev>>n with the cowboys they would address everyone as Mr., until they came to me and then they just said Tom Mix " The Pukekohe Cricket Club have asked the Borough Council to lay a pi' ch on the Domain, for which the Club would pay. Concrete would be preferable, but Union asphalt would do as a substitute. Cr J. Patterson thought a good grass pitch would be the better, as it would not interfere with football. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr C K. Lawrie) the request was granted, subject to the Works Committee's approval, which body would have power to act.
The arrangements for Peace celebrations on November 11th in connexion with the Rama Rama school ■ire well in hand. Given a fino dav the children and friends may anticip ite a very enjoyable time. The school Roll ot Honour showing the names of 12 former pupils who respoaded to the Empire's call will be unveiled. Souvenirs will be given to each pupil. The afternoon will be devoted to sports and games and the evening to a display of fireworks. Needless to say, the Ladies Committoo will amply provide for the inner man.
The mooting held last night in the Borough Council Chambers for the purpose of further discussing the question of a memorial to fallen soldiers was very poorly attended, about tiftoon only being present. | Seemingly the residents felt that j having given their views on the matter at a recent poll there was no reed for further ado about it The , meeting, without dissent, decided to adhere to the expressed wish of the I ratepayers that the memorial take | the form of swimming baths, with ■ memorial arch, to be paid for by , voluntary public subscriptions. Meetings of various sports clubs, patriotic and other societies may be called to consider a plan of campaign foi raising the funds.
