RAGLAN COUNTY. Question of Grants. War Loan Octopus. Minister of Public Works, A somewhat grave tone was observable at the last meeting of the .Raglan County Council, the chairman (Cr Campbell Johnstone) presiding, in reference to the difficulty of securing subsidies. Cr C. Otway introduced the sub ject. The clerk, Mr 11. Marsland: We have had £40,000 during the past year, and eighty other counties are also requiring subsidies. The chairman : The war loan is absorbing all the money at present Cr Otway: Unless the Government assist us there is going to be stagnation The ehairni'in : We must hear in mind that never has there heon as many i>ro<rressivo s hemes en as at present. Kvery local hody recognises that nothing short of metalled roads are any good now a days. He was assurod by the Minister that the County's requirements would receive every consideration, hut the Minister fur Public Works (Hon. W. Fraser) would not pledge the Govornmenttoany expenditure, on £1 for £1 subsidies, as ho had always done in pievious years, because it would not be fur in the event of the present Government going out of ollice. Cr Otway : I liope he is in no doubt about his going out. Th. chairman: For my part I think the Hon. Fraser a very line man He has always carried out his promises.
