LOCAL AND GENERAL.
On several occasions lately casual subscribers have been disappointed by not being able to secure copies of the Times. Once more we would impress upon the public the fact that a few extra copies only are printed Frankly, we have no sympathy for people who have not onough interest in their town and district to become permanent subscribers to a local paper that gives as good value as any other local paper in Now Zealand, for one penny. Order aud (for preference) pay for a year in advance, thus ensuring mutual satisfaction.
Picture patrons are notified that the pictures will be shown on Tuesday ot next week and not on Wednesday. This is done in order that time may be given to prepare the hall for tho Flower Show. At a meeting of St. Andrews' Church Flower Show Committee, held oa Wednesday night, there was a good attendance, over which the President, Mr J. Dent presided, it was decided to hold the Rose and Sweet Pea Show on November 13 and 14, a fortnight earlier than the 1918 Show, which lapsed on account the epidemic, was to bo helds Entries for all classes, closo on November Bth, at 9 p.m. Mr and Mrs Bayly and Miss Mavis Brown, were added to the committee. The question of holding a gift stall and a sale of work, was entrusted to the members of the Lalies' Guild. The Committee meets on October 15th next.
The Times has often wondered why the local body of a certain outdistrict township does not advertise its public announcements in this, its local paper, instead of resorting to the ancient blackblocks' substitute of plastering notices in shop windows. We discovered the reason recently: wh<m persusing our reporter's account of a meeting of ratapayers we noted that one of them charae'erised the place thusly: "It is fifty years behind the times." Ju&t so, the local body of that township is the only one of a score or more that we report the meetings of, in three counties, that gives us no encouragement to continue sending our reporter to the meetings, paying his salary and expenses, and publishing the reports at a cost to us of over £2 a column. The ratepayers in general are eager to read the reports of local affairs, but if the place does not prove more appreciative in the future than it has done in the past we must "cut it out" altogether. Verily, at present it certainly is fifty years behind the times—and the rest.
