WINTER SHOW PROPOSAL

Adopted by Executive of A. and P. Society The advisability of holding a Winter Show in Pukekohe was further considered at Ja meeting of the Franklin A. and P. Society on Thursday. The sub-committee set up to go into the matter su v ,mitted the f llowing report: * The sub-committee appointed to »• organise a Winter Sho v, under the auspices of the Franklin A. and P. met in the Society's office on Monday, August 18th at 8 p.m. Present: Messrs James Roulston, James Wylie, F. Ballard, F. Perkins and the secretary, Mr D. B. Hamilton. The meeting was held at the instigation of the Executive of the Franklin A. and P. Society, and an instruction from the Executive was that a fairly comprehensive report should be furnished by the Winter Show Committee. In the event of the Executive favourably considering same, they would be prepared to recommend its adoption by the members of their Society. This the com- , mittee have endeavoured to do, and, after long and anxious coisideration of the many features represented in a Winter Show, finally reduced their deliberati >ns to the following: 1. Would it be in the interests of the A. and P. Society to control the management of the Winter Show, and if so, should one be held this year ? 2. Ways and means and dates of Winter Show? 3. Would a Winter Show prove to be a financial success ? As a result the commit.ee beg to report that they are unanimously of the opinion that the Society should hold a Winter Show this coming year, feeling certain that by assuming control they have everything to gain and nothing to lose. If it refuses to take the responsibility, then without doubt, another section of the public will do so in the near future, and dual control, with its attendant overlapping of management and general expenses will not be in the interests of the Society, nor yet of the district It would also lead to serious rivalry in matters of finance, such as canvassing for subscriptions, special prizes, and new members. In reference to ways and mean?, the committee recommended the holding of a four day's show. The dates to be the 21st 22nd 23rd and 2 Ith of May, the show to be held on the Society's ground, and that suitable buildings be erected in which the machinerv and side shows could be accommodated. The estimated cost of these buildings to be upwards of £IOOO. On first thought this may seem to be a big sum to commit the Society to, but the committee feel it is of the utmost importance to start on sound lines, and sufficient building accommodation will appeal alike to both exhibitors and the genoral public, and will go far to secure the support necessary from them to niuks the show a su'eess. The committee would also like to point out that the salo of 11 ior apace will moro than p.ty interest of the cost of the building And it will also serve as a pavilion to house the podigreo stock exhibits at the Autumn Show _ Tho committee have gone matter of finance very thoroughly, and are confideut the show will be a financial success and a profit will be made. They realise that for the first year strict economy will have to be exercise 1, and purpose keeping the prize list and other expenses as low as possible. Mr J. Roulston said he was sure tint if special trains could be arranged tho support from Auckland alone would easily pay for the pri/fR allotted. Mr D, R. Hamilton (feeretary) said ho had been informed by an architect that a building like the present one on the Showground would cost about £350 One three times the siza would be required, and would cost about £IOOO. In reply to a question as to how tho money would be fouli to erect a building, a membpr said, " Ask the Society to raise an overdraft of £1000." " Mr J. Roulston said he could get •JO or .*'.() men to indemnify the "■'ocie'.y against any losh Hh was sure the Show could be run with a credit balance Mr C K I/iwr'.e said tho reprt was the best ami most coouirehensi7e ever submitted to Society. For this the committer deserved the best thinks of the S >ciety. Ho moved to this effect, and the motion wis cirried by accl.i'ii ition. Continuing, he *»v\ that to his mind it would be good for the district to inaugurate something of the kind. Ho moved that the report be adopted Mr J. K Hain i I ton seconded and asked if l;> building would be erected before the next A. and P. Aulunn Sh>w. Smoothing of the sort, or pens, were icquired for the n-xt Show for the purpose of housing pedigree stock. In reply, Mr Rouls.ton sail if the proposal were adopted thi-y would get on with the building ri_'ut away. The ino'ion wis dried unanimously and it was decided to refer the matter to the general eommitttee, and a general meeting o c members ou October 2nd, at 2 p m Messrs Daysh, J K. ilan i t >n and Shatp, were appointed a sub committee, to hterviow Mr J Routley, to arrange for plans of a building, ami to selects suitable sue, a report of tho pi ins to l».i submitted to a i'u'ui'' meeting.
