An excellent piece of engineering work was exemted by Messrs W & G Blrke at the Times office a few days ago. Several months ago a fault developed in the printing machine, anc. defied various persons who attempted to locate it. Owing to this defect, such a strain was thrown on the heavy cast iron crank shaft that it smashed, and had to be sent to Auckland f)r re-casting. In the meantime Messrs W & G Blnke located the fau't—a rather delicate matter—and also constructed a new temporary wooden shaft, s.rongly reinforced with iron bands, to replace the broken one. As the machine, which has given endless trouble and anxiety, is now working well, there is joy in the mechanical department of the Time?, thanks to the local firm above referred to.
