FARMERS' UNION

Franklin Sub Provincial District The monthly meeting of the Franklin Sub-Provincial District was held in the A. and P. committee room on Monday 7th July, 1919. Mr H. 0. Mellsop, (president) in the chair. Other delegates present were Messrs J. Schlaepfer (Pukekohe), E. Frost (Tuakau), W. L West (Waiuku), A, Pell (Mauku), A. Jones (Waipipi), E. Piggott (Buckland), L. Morgan (Pukekohe East), C. Hodgkinson (Glenbrook), and R. W. Jonns (Mauku). A letter was received from the Auckland provincial office, asking the Franklin Sub-Provincial District to support Government Agricultural Implements Depots, where farmers could hire at a cheap rate agricultural implements. After considerable discussion a motion was passed that this subProvincial district considers such a scheme unworkable; aDd a better plan would be for the Government to tako every possible means in its power to cheapen the cost of agricultural implements for the farmer. A letter was received from the Kaipara Sub-Provincial District asking this district to support a motion urging the Government to give effect to the Parliamentary committee's recommendations. With regard to the Meat Trust it was decided to givo this motion every support. A motion was passed recommending the Education Department to try and hold the Farmers Kuakura Instruction Classes a month earlier next year as owing to the atari of the dairying soason many farmers found it Tory hard to get away at the end of July. Mr Bell brought up for discussion th) question of th" Government subsidy to local bodies. lie presented a table showing where some ridings got as high a subsidy as 27.6 per cent while others were down to 49. per cent. As no one present could exulain why, it was decided to ask the County Council for an explanation.
