The Basaltic Formation at Ararimu.
Sir,—The very interesting articlo under the above heading, which appeared in your issue of June 6th, should, even if it has no other effect, serve to bring more prominently before those having geological knowledge or experience the remarkable stone formation in Mr Whelan's creek. The theory advanced by your contributor as to the origin of the formation, though well backed up by sound reasoning is not necessarily the last word on the subject, and others may yit be heard. The writer wonders, however, why the Maoris should n ime this stream this Blackwater (M ingawai). For your correspondent's benefit I may state that the name Mangawai is given here in error; the correct name of the stream, given on all maps which T have seen, is " Mangawheau." An interpretation of that name by your correspondent, or anyone else well versed in the Maori language, may possibly throw some light on th i opinions which the Maoris held about the stream, or the remarkable stone formation in q i-Htion.—l am, etc , M. MARKHAM. Ararimu.
