LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

PAERATA LOAN Sir,—With your kind permission I would like to draw the attention of the Paerata ratepayers to the proposed loan, for which a poll is to be taken on the 9th July. Provision is made for spending a portion of it from Pukekohe boundary to the proposed new level crossing on the southern side of Paerata station. Now, I maintain that this new level crossing and proposed new road leading t > it, thence to the level crossing at the northern side of Pae--1 rata station, is no benefit to the ' majority of the ratepayers The , crossing will ho close U> die station, and the trains will very often stop on it and block the tralfio, and at other times will be shunting, so no one will know when it is safe to cross, thus making it practically no better thau the old one. The new road passing it may take anything from*£6so of £7,50 to make and fence, which, I suppose the Council intends to do. Then we will have the ludicrous sight of a double road and double line for nearly a mile, and both roads to be kept in repair. Now, at a meeting held some time ago to see if the ratepayers were in favoi-r of a loan we were given to understand that none oi the loan would be spent on this proposed new road wnich was kept in the dark, only it was driggtd into the light of day by a few of thoso not j liking to road other people's property l at their expense. I will admit this ! new road would be a great # as?ot to j the two properties that it would go 'through. And, pertups, it would i be a good thing if the said proper | ties changed hands, as both belong to absentees, and are getting overrun witli noxious weeds which is a draw back to any district. Hut what ] maintain is that we should j have the present roads put in ! thorough order before wo cater f«r I luxury. Now: are we ratopayera ! going M stand by and allow puldi" ; waste of money wh;n .-..> niuiv "f j the ro.n's iin.'iind :ir- in >■'.: !i .. shocking sti f .o '. The <! (t<r-« are nnablo to vw'. their pihouts wi lr>u f the greatest of di'iiculiy, and !»•■ Miiaared with mud. Why not take a poll of tho ratepayers, to s■■••> if they approve of those alterations'? I venturo to say the verdict will be No! JOHN CRAWFORD
