One of their opponents tries to shoot Nan, but Joe leaps in front, saves her life and is fatally wounded. The desperadoes are beaten and two of them axi killed. John and Nan bury Ys.jui Joe and return to the homestead. There they are trapped and the house is set on fire. At the last minute they escape through the secret tunnel and return to the stables to get horses.
