LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the birthday of the Prince of Wales. The ffag was flown over the local Post Office in honour of His Royal Highness.
The return euchre tournament between the staff of the local dairy factory and the bowling club will take place in the latter's pavilion tomorrow evening.
Complaints are made that the lamp opposite Messrs Perkins' shop, at the junction, has not been lighted for several nights lately, thereby causing inconvenience at a spot where there is a lot of traffic.
The sum of £6O has been received by the Pukekohe Town Clerk (Mr J. F. Deane), from the secretary of the Pukekohe branch of Auckland Women's Patriotic League (Miss H. V. Webster), being/ the amount raised by means of the recent Flower Show. The League desires tne money to be spent on some particular portion of whatever local memorial is decided upon, according to the League's wish. The Franklin Eugby Union championships were advanced a further stage on Saturday. Owing to the rain, the grounds were in a somewhat slippery condition, and consequently the play was somewhat of the " scratchy " order. The results were—Seniors: Pukekohe beat Tuakau, 14-0 ; Waiuku beat Bombay, 6-3; Juniors: Pukekohe andTuakau, draw (3 all); Waiuku beat Bombay, 12-0. Our detailed report is unavoidably crowded out. Or A. P. Daysh referred to the excessive speed at whioh some motorists travel through King street, at the Borough Council meeting, on Wednesday last. He thought something should be done to regulate the traffic. The Town Clerk stated that the amended by-laws, which were in the printer's hands, would be ready in the course of a few days. It was decided to supply the local police with a copy of the amended by-laws, with a request that they be enforced. The practise of some people, in insisting upon driving vehicles along the public highways after dark, without lights, contrary to the bylaws of the Pukekohe Borough Council, is becoming a very common occurrence now-a-days. The police insist on everyone carrying lignts, and, as a warning to future offondender, two first offenders were brought before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., on Thursday, and a nominal fine of ss, together with coste, was imposed in each case. At the monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr C. E. Lawrie) said, in his opinion, fhe time had arrived when some steps should be taken to have motor mechanics registered. As it was, mechanics not qualified " juggled " with a man's car, and in some cases, damaged £6OO or £7OO worth of property. It was not a fair thing to owners to have boys " fiddling about" with cars, when they , knew little or nothing about them. The charges, too, were extortionate. " Yes," said Or Dent; "if you look into a garage in* the morning, to see how your car is doing, they charge you a dollar for that." (Laughter.) Pupils of the Pukekohe school, who entered exhibits at the recent Waikato Winter Show, were successful as follows '.—llluminated copy of Lord's Prayer, Avis Simpson, Standard V, 1. The same pupil was awarded third prize for Standard Y drawing folio. May Shotbolt, Standard YI, was awarded second prize for drawing folio. Colin McArthur, Standard VI, sucoeeded in gaining third prize for a map of the British Isles. Kingsley Brown was first for writing in Standard YI, while Amy Harriman secured a third prize for Standard Y writing. Irene Lees and Kathleen Matuschka were second and third respectively in the writing class for Standard 111. The above results must be considered highly satisfactory by the principals of the school.
