Thursday's Meeting The ordinary monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council was held in the Council chambers, Hall street, Pukekohe, on Thursday, when there were present—The Chairman (Cr W. Claud Motion), Crs J. 8. Montgomerie, T. W. Woods, J. S. Short, W. H. Thomas, J. Keith, H. Wilcox, and T. J. Lockwood, with the Clerk (Mr Alan P. Day), and the Engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur). An apology for absence was received from Cr R T. Reid (Waiuku). WAIAU- KARAKA T-OAN. In reply to the Council's application for a£l for 1 subsidy on the Waiau-Karaka loan, the Minister for Public Works wrote stating that Government subsidies were not given, or never had been given, on loan proposals, but grants were placed on the Estimates to subsidise particular works, leaving it to the local body to find its share in such a manner as it pleased. The Minister further stated that the Council was asking him to guarantee a subsidy of £27,000 towards the money proposed to be borrowed, without any particulars being supplied as to the nature of these works. He asked for a schedule of of such works as the Council desired to have placed on this year's Estimates. The Minister added that he did not feel on the eve of a General Election, in plodding the resources of the Dominion for some years to come. The mattor was left in the hands of the Engineer and Cr Montgomery to apply for subsidy on the mair roads r ArARIMU-MAI'XOATA H 111 HI With reference to the Paparimu Maungatawhiri Road, th Ministei for Public VVorks stated that it November, 1910, he agreed to tlv Council proceeding with the com pletion of the formation of the road on the understanding th it a £ for J subsidy, nut exceeding £ 1 would' be paid when funds wer available to the Government. Th 1 estimated cost of the wc rk include in the plans and speci'ications wa t£2071, and a £ for £ subsidy or. thfi amount would be £l?h6, or sa £I3OO, which was £2OO than th £ISOO promised on the certiiicat system. The minister stated tha £I3OO A for A* was not available ft the work, and he was issuing authoi ity for the amount part of tli ' £ISOO £ for £ promised on the cert ficate system. The Engineer we instructed to call tenders for the coa pletion of the work as soon as poi sible.
SMEED's ROAD, TL'AKAI The Minister for Public Works advised that the Council's application for subsidy of £6OO £ for £ for Smeed's Road, Tuakau, was receiving attention.—Received. CUSTOMS DI'TY The Comptroller of Customs acknowledged a resolution passed by the Council relative to remission of customs duty on materials imported by Local Bodies for Public Works, and stated that the request would be considered on the first occasion on which the tariff schedules were under review.- The letter was received and the Clerk was instructed to write to the Minister when Parliament sits, urging him to bring the matter forj ward. KARAKA STATION In regard to the Council's request for the Karaka station to be opened for goods and passenger traffic, the Minister for Railways intimated that the matter would bo looked into. — Inferred pending a further reply from ihe Minister. VALUATION ROLLS The Valuation Department forwarded revised valuation rolls for Diury riding, and luteMaungatawhiri Road District, portion of Pukekohe East riding, to remain open for inspection at County office. - The Clerk stated the rolls were in the office, and had to be returned, but when completed would be returned to the County office. The rolls would bo ready for next meeting.

in winter time—Referred to the Engineer. BUCKLAND-TUAKAU Mr W. Peters, of Buckland, drew the attention of the Council to the storm water drainage in front of his property, Buckland-Tuakau road. He pointed out that there was no drain to carry the water away.—The Engineer stated that the matter would be attended to as soon as pos-sible-Left in tbehands of Cr Wilcox and the Engineer. DBTJRY PERMIT. Mr O. R. Hewlett, of. Drury, applied for permission to fence off, clear and cultivate a portion of the unused road on the north side of St John's Church property, at Drury. The Clerk replied that at a recent meeting of the Council it was resolved that the Church Trustees be notified that the Council offered no objection to the Trustees temporarily closing the portion of unused road for the purposes stated, on the understanding that the Council may at any time require such road to be opened up if it was required for public use. The Clerk's action was approved I'OKEXO COMPLETION. Mr E Friedlander. of Surrey Hill Farm, Pokeno, wrote asking the Council to complete formation of the road to his faro.. He pointed out that there was a few chains to be dono. Left to Cr Keith and the Engineer. KKTtI KEP.I HILL. Mr Gilbert Wilson and six others requested the Council to make improvements to the road on Keri Keri Hill, giving access to their properties. The Cloik was in struct sd to reply that the Council understood that the road was to bo constructed by the Government. POKESO VALLEY. Mr F. Lowry, of Pokeno Valley, applied for the road at the back of his farm to be opened up in o-der 1 that he might gain access to the back of his property. It would require ! three .sots of 9-inch pipes, and if the Council supplied them he offered to ' construct them at his own exponse. 1 I r Keith said that in the first ! place on!\ one set of nine-inch and one of throe inch pipes were asked * for. Now, apparently, thren sets C were wanted. He moved that two ' sots of 0 inch be suppliod in the meantime.- Carried
WHAXOAIMTA ROAD. Mr J. Woodcock, Tmkau, requested the Council to consider the state of Whaugara'.a Road. He pointed out that the track was so narrowed by the growth of weeds that it was impossible to get along in bad weather He also asked the Council to allow him £2 for work done on the road to Mr J. Fraser's. It was iccided to reply that the track was receiving attention. MERCER RESERVE. Messrs Glass Brothers, of Mercer, wrote offering to lease the quarry reserve at Mercer, and oiTeiiag to undertake to keep the reserve clear from noxious weeds The Ciork stated that a resident of Mercer bad offered to lease the land for a market garden It was vested in tho Mercer Tosvn Board, which body had leased it to Mr Butler. The Clerk was instructed to investigate and report, with the assistance of Cr Keith and the Engineer. The Chairman added that the ground might be useful for the Council's horses TRAMWAY ROAD I.OAX. The Public Trust Office, Wellington, adviyed that the Council's application for a loan of £3,000 for Tramway road, Mauku, had been grained, at it J per cent plus one per ceuc sinking in ad, for a period of 36 h years, Mibject to the sufficiency ami legality of the security. Reierred to Cr Montgomerie and the Clerk for surther investigation. I'OXOA ROAD. Mr W. J. Parker, of Upabeke, wrote drawing the Council's attention to the state of th* lower p utiou of the Ponga road. Opaheko, opposite his farm Loft to the Engineer MKTAT. Dl'Ml'. The Now Zealand Railways advised that a site ?."> x S yards was available for a metal dump at the new Drury station.—Reeeivtd. - KAMA KAMA. Mr C. Davis, Rama Rama, wrote asking for an alteration to th<> proposed short line of load through his property. The Engineer reported that a ' quarry was being made, ami his 1 action was approved.
