PUKEKOHE WATERWORKS.

Committee's Report. The Waterworks and Lighting committee reported to the last meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council as follows: —We have to report having visited the power-house on May 13th, and found everything except the pump working smoothly. We recommend the following—(1) That a new electric-driven pump be purchased, as it has been found that since the main crank shaft on the old pump broke it will not stand the strain of pumping* to the top reservoir. [2.) lhat the coal hopper be enlarged, to allow more coal to be stored. (.'V) That power be given to your committee to call a further meeting of outside local bodies re electrical extensions."

The chairman of the committee (Cr said, in connexion with tho pump, that the engineer had effected temporary repairs to the pump, but ho was afraid it would "knock outat anytime. If the shaft broke they would be in a very serious position. They had to keep the water supply intact, and if anything happened, and the pressu.io gave out in the time of fire, the position would be acute. The committee recommended the Council to purchase a pump with expedition. In view.of the fact that there was likely to be a shortage of coal, they should make preparations to keep a good stock in reserve, and, with this object m view, he would like to see the coal hopper enlarged. It would not be a costly job, and would be of a permanent nature, and would not be a recurring expense. As regards the third recommendation, the Mayor had dealt with it, and he was pleased to see his Worship intended to call delegates from local bodies together. The previous committee was not altogether pleased with the response of delegates upon the occssion of the last meeting, in view of the fact that at the initial meeting they were very enthusiastic. He thought steps should again be taken to light the outer part of the Borough and outside districts and enable them to be ready Jinked up for the Grovernmen- scheme. They proposed to get a repoit and get the various local boiies to contribute thereto He considered it would be the be*t £IOO they ever subscribed to. The Mayor said tho plant would cost about £4">o but as there was £?ooo bornwyd and not called up, they cou'd use this, lie felt quite satisfied that they should prepare for eventualities and see the town safeguarded as regards light and water.

Other Councillors supported the recommendations.

The report was adopted on the motion of Crs Morrow and Daysh. Cr Daysh reported that the Works committee had decided to experiment with one chain sandstone in lieu of 100 yards in view of the hard matter to quarry it, and the expense of laying it down, which c ist Ss per yard. They intended to experiment on the Buckland Road, near Mr Hamilton's residence.

The question of providing lavatory accommodation at the public library and recreation ground was referred t" the Drainage <••jinmittee.
