PEACE CELEBRATION EXPENSES.
County Council Action. At the last meeting of the Franklin County Council, the Awhitu and Drury Peace Celebration Committees requested the Council to obtain Government subsidies towards expenses for Peace Celebrations in their respective districts. Cr Montgomeiie thought it would bo better not to have the small "tin pot" celebrations. Cr Lockwood did not favour such i a suggestion, and pointed out that I some people could not attend large centres, but would attend their own I little celebration. The Chairman thought that if the i various districts intended to do anyj thing they should find their own I money, and then could apply to the J Council for the Government subsidy. Cr Lockwood thought each member should be authorised to subside moneys collected up to certain i amounts He suggested levying it on a valuation oasi<i with a maxi mum of say £. r )0, Cr Woods thought it' the people wanted it they should subscribe towards it, hut he did not think it should come out of tho County funds. Cr Lockwood thought it did not matter. It could be taken from the Genera! Account on a valuation , basis. The Chairman suggested subsidis- j each district's amount 4! for i' ! and then it could apph for the | Government subsidy. Government FuLsidv would aNo l.e I fo/thcoiiiing, Cr Wilcox did not approve of giv- I ing the County funds away. Ah far j as he could say the people intended to subscribe and then they would receive tho Government subsidy, If the people were given to understand the .
