WHANGAREI TOURNAMENT

PUKEKOHE SUCCESSFUL

Daring the Easter holidays, three teams representing the Pukekohe Bowling Club invaded Whangarei to compete in a tournament promoted by 'hi Whangarei Club, and it is gratifying to chronicle their efforts were successful, as one of the rinks (skipped by Mr B. Fitness) succeeded in capturinK the prize of £lO in connexion with the tournament. The Pukekohe teams were R Fitness (skip), W. Pleydell, Q Pirrett, and E Cuff; 0. K. Lawne (•kip), W. Wilson, R. Bigginson, and R. Fulton; A. C Oill (skip), J. Goldswortby, Walter Wright, and D. Koran

The other teams competing hiiled from Whangarei, Bikurangi, Kawakawa, and Dargaville. The various sections were won by Pukekohe and Whangarei, and in the play off a tie resulted on the last head, necessi-tating-the placing of an extra head. Bight through the head the issue was in doubt, but in the concluding stages Fitness placed his bowls brilliantly, and, after a most strenuous and exciting contest predominated by a single point Undoubtedly it was one tf the most exciting games ever witne sed on the Whangarei green, and the visitor* deserved their win, which was veiy popular, as after the match, Fitness (the winning skip) was carried ehoulder high around the green amidst the enthuoiaun of about ■2OO t-pfctators. On the Saturday the teams were th« gues's to he Hikurangi club, at Hiknmiigi, and visited many beauty spots, including ihe limestone roths and the coal mines. The visit was thoroughly enjoyed, and the local howlers were hospitably entertained wherever they j urneyed. It is eipected they will return again next year.
