FIFTY MILE EHASE

PRISONER RECAPTURED GOOD BTRA.TEGY After a very interesting chase, traversing over fifty miles of a circuitous route, a prisoner Charles Edward Bolton, who escaped from Mt. Eden jail, was recaptured at Ngatea, near Thames, at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The prisoner's whereabouts after escape was found to be at Brookby, and elaborate arrangements were made by the police at Fukekohe, under whose direction the affair lay, to follow and capture the escapee. By keeping to the bush as closely as possible, Bolton made the task of recapture a particularly hard one, being most difficult to keep in touch with bis movements However, he was tracked from Brookby to Alfriston, at which time he had only a pair of trousers, and thence to Maitaitai, whet* he obtained a coat and hat from a settler (Maori probably), and on to Orere, Miranda, and Waitakaruru, Pipiroa, and Ngatea, where he met his Waterloo. The latter pfftce is 15 miles from Thames, and Bolton had thus travelled round the coast of the Firth of Thames, haying been followed for over 50 miles.

Warder Brophy and Constable Taylor (Tuakau) found traces of Bolton's movements at Miranda on Saturday. They followed his tracks on the beach and finally discovered him on Sunday morning as stated. He was taken across country to Pukekohe, and brought before the Court here last evening on a charge of having escaped from legal custody. He was remanded to appear at Auckland today. From Pukekohe he was brought to Auckland last evening in charge of Warder Brophy and lodged in Mount Eden Jail.

Bolton, who is 29 years of age, unmarried, is a miner, who is aaid to have formeily resided at Waibi. He was arrested on April 9, at Horahora, near Cambridge on charges of theft and vacancy, and was sentenced to a month's imprisonmenti He had also been wanted by the police on warrant for maintenance bince 1916, and was to have appeared at the Police Court to answer this charge. Smart work was done by the police, directed from Pukekuhe
