SHOOTING GAME OUT OF SEASON
At the sitting of the Magistrate's Court at lieroer on Wednesday lut before Mr F. K. Hunt, B.M i Mercer youth named Gilbert George Glass was charged with having destroyed five wild ducks and a Fukeko during the close season ffii Worship in inflicting a fine of £5 on each of the charges ex* • preslofl his determination to put a stop to the practice of illegal shooting of game, which he added, tended to induce the birds to depart from their customary haunts before the shooting season opened.
FLAXMILL REFUSE
During the sitting of the Court on the same day Mr F- K. Hunt, B.M. was occupied in hearing csess brought about by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society against persons allowing fl*xmill refuse to flow into the Waucato River and Lake Waikare. The defendants wen Mr B. T. Fr ist of Tuakauand Mr Kenneth Kennedy of Te Kauwhata. The former who was chained with allowing the refuse to flow into the Waikato and did not uom vh convicted and fined £$ and ordered to pay 19s Court costs; while Ken* new who put in an appearance enplained that he had taken steps to avoid the circumstances complained of. t . His Worship aooepted the explanation to a certain extent and inflicted a ni?" 11 "** fine of £2 together with costs amounting to 19s. AT.Tomroft vnoit Movnro rails The practice of quitting a railway train wnilst in motion is becoming very common. On March 7th rt Tuakau a resident of Woodtagh named Robert H. Lee alighted from a moving train and in so doing his footing and became entangled between the kerbing of the platform and passing cars. It was only through the prompt action of Constable Taylor that Lee was saved from rolling under the wheels. As a sequel to the incident he found himself before Mr F. K. Hunt, B.M. at the sitting of the Mercer Court on Wednesday last charged with the offence, and was fined £1 and £1 Is 8d oosts The defendant can consider hfinralf the luckiest man in the world, as it was a case of life or death if Constable Taylor had not acted promptly and rescued him from his awkward predicament.
ALLEGED SEIZURE OF SHEEP. The alleged seizure by a farmer, Walter P. Peter#, ol Miranda, of 120 sheep, valued at £l5O, running on his faijn in the Miranda district, the sheep being the property of a Maori woman named Aherata Tea Waata, and Thomas Edmund S-nith, also of Miranda, engaged the attention of Mr P. K. Hu BM. m tto Mercer Magistrates urt on Wednesday last. Peter* (MrR. N. Moody) wa- «ued l»y plaintiff* (M* Oonld) for tti - return of the sheep, <* £1)0 as thur equivalent. The evidence was to the effect that Teas father died some time ago, and his farm passed iito the possession of his two son , both of whom succumbed in tlid inflaetwa fpi lemic last November. Te i then succeeded to the farm On Februny 10, Peters, who claimed ownership flf 120 sheep, went on the farm and drove them away. Evidence was not c included, and further hearing v u adjourned to Auckland. CLAIM FOB PASTCKIXG SHEEP.
A claim for £1 3s i 1 was m .de by Alfred Brook, of Clen Murray, against T, A. Johan of \Voodleigh, for paMockin* sheep belonging to defendant in plaintiff's paddock. . After hearing evidence, the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintifi tot 7s 6d, together with costs amounting to 30s. CLAIM FOR GOOD 9 AXD FLAX SOLD. Leslie William Milson, farmer, of Taniwha, proceeded against, A Couoer, earner, of Te Kauwhata, ft>r £l4 2s 6J, for goods and flax sold. After hearing evidence, his Worship gave judgment for the amount claimed, and ordered defendant to pay costs, £3 6s 6d. DEBT CiSB. At the same sitting judgment was given for plaintiff in the case Waikato River Board v. Puea Twikatt, of Metoer, claim £l6 8a Sd, with 28aco«ts.
