COUNCIL MEETING
OTAHUHU.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council was heldton Wednesday last Present: the Mayor (Mr A. McDonald, Ors H. V. Stringer, W. J. Wildman, B. Todd, H. J. Hall, and the Town Clerk (Mr W. J. Denniaon). Apology for absence was receded from Cr Brady. PIACH CBLEBRATIONB A letter was received from the City Council re Peace Celebrations, stating that all local body representatives should meet at Quay street and proceed thence to the domain, in conveyances at the expense of the various local bodies. The letter was" re* ceived." TUB SPIDXMIC The Public Health Department wrote returning thanks for, and expressing their appreciation of the voluntary work done during the recent epidemic. The letter was " received." CI.EASIXO-UF WBEK The forenun furnished a report regarding the above, showing that 34 loads of rubbish had been carted to the tip, at a cost of £3l, Although general satisfaction was expressed, several Councillors thought the expense involved was rather excessive The Mayor explained that the Council did not receive th<* assistance from the residents exject.d, ioas much as in several cases tbe men had to gather up tbe rubbish themselves, instead of collecting it at the various gates.
It was suggested by the Councillors that similar work should be done periodically, and a motion moved by Or Wildman, that such be a recom mendation to the in-coming Council The report was adopted.
APPLICATION FOB BPILDING PSBMIT An application was received from Mr W. .Reed regarding the erection of a brick building in Qreat South Road. The applicant had applied previously for permission to remove the present building, and erect a brick one at the back thereof, but the Council considered that the application could not be granted in accordance with the building byelaws.
Mr Beed now furnished an amended plan which provided for the new building being attached to the old one, tae connection being a wall of brick, whereas the previous plan had shown two detached buildings. Or Todd considered that it was evident the applicant was prepared to erect a building to the extent of £ISOO which would be an acquisition to the borough, and thought it was only a technicality which might prevent the permit be* ing granted. After some discussion it was agreed to refer the matter to the building surveyor'for his report.
CLAIM FOR MEDICAL EXPBKSKB A letter was read from Dr McDonald who asked the Council to defray the medical expenses of a resident whom he treated during the recent epidemic, or failing which, would the Council recommend the claim being met by the Charitable Aid Board or the Health Department. The matter was left in the hands of the Town Clerk to arrange with the Public Health Dapartmen , as it was considered that for the Council to meet such claims would be estab* Hairing an unwarrantable precedent
THE REFUSE QUESTION The Mayor reported, as a result of a visit paid to the tip head in Water street, the use of which had been objected to by some residents, that he and other Councillors considered the old tip at the end of Church street, would be a more suitable place to deposit rubbish.
SPECIAL MEETING The Mayor intimated to the Council that a special meeting wonld be held on Wednesday next, 16th inst.
