SCHOOL PRTEES DISTRIBUTION.
A very pleasant evening was held in the Mauku school-room on Friday, the 14th instant, when the prizes won by the various children for school work were presented. The committee had arranged a short programme in connection with the Erize-giving, to which all houseolders were invited. The function proved a remarkable success, and, there were about lt>o peojlfi^jfcfont. For the past so, the collectionsta prizes bad been dropto the many patriotic calls parents had to meet, but this year Mr E. Hill, hearing that no prizes were to be distributed, very kindly donated a sum sufficient to see the matter through. The Chairman (Mr A. Franklin) in presenting the prizes, called for three cheers for Mr Hill, to which all responded in a most hearty manner. The prizes were won as follows Primer i, Anna Qillon; primer ri, | Myra Crispe; primer in, Roland Flexman; standard i; Dorothy Clayton 1, Kenny Cutfield 2; standard ii : Donald Bree 1, Ppggy Ahfeld 2 ; standard in: Katie Nobbs 1, Lorna Flexman 2; standard iv: Willie Warin and Mavis Gutry (tie) 1, Nora Qillon 2 ; standard v : I. Jenkins 1, Basil Clayton 2; standard vi: Iris Foster 1, Myrtle Pleydell 2 ; special prize standard vi: Norman Gutry. Special prizes given for best conduct in and out of school, which was decided on a secret vote of the children, were won as follows Senior girls, Mavis Gutry; senior boys, George Bell (deceased); junior girls, Eva Foster; junior boy*, Bertram Flexman. In connection with the swimming classes held by the teachers, Miss Rowe offered a prize for the first girl to learn to swim, resulting in a tie between Mavis Gutry and Phyllis Flexman. The boys' diving and swimming under water prize, donited by Mr (iutry, was won by Eric Ferguson. Songs, recitations, and selections, were rendered by the following, all of which met with marked approval —viz, Misses Hemsworth, Warin, Rowe, and Graham (violin), Rev. Bailey, Messrs Hemsworth (2), Fallows, Walker, Gutry, and M Crispe; a phonograph selection by Mr Hill. Miss Warin acted as accompanist in her usual graceful manner. * In thanking all those who assisted to make the function such a* success, Mr Franklin made special mention of Miss* Warin for her assistance, Mr Gutry for lending his piano, and Mr E. Hill for his generosity. A vote of thanks to the chairman, and the singing of the National Anthem brought the social to a close, after which supper, which had b> on provided by the ladies, was libera liy dispensed to young and old. PROPOSED WAR MEMORIAL At ft meeting of residents of ilie Mauku district, held on Monday evening, it was resolved to promote the erection of a public hall as a memorial of the signal victory gained over the Germans. Bome substantial subscription were promised at the gathering, and the gift of a suitable site was made by Mr C. A Crispe. A committer* of sevon was appointed to canvass for funds, and to report in a fortnight. The proposal feems to meet with general approval in the neighbourhood.
