WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.
(To (he Editor.) Silt, In your issue of the 21st instant a report on the above question mentions that Mr Claude Mo'ion stated that the lay of the country made it impossible to find some can - tral site to serve bath Waiuku and Pukekohe with a hospital. I would like to call attention to the claims of Mauku. Here is exactly the position for such an institution, and Mr Motion clearly missed it. Mauku lies midway between the two townships on the main road, and is a place wi'h a remarkable record as a health-giving locality, as is evidenced by the small proportion of sickness during the recent epidemic. There are sfveral most excellent and suitable sites, and the establishment of a hospital on any one of them would admirably suit both Waiuku or Pukekohe. The modern means of motor transit would make Mauku quickly and easily accessible to both places Taking such a position as Patumahoe hill for instance, where could a more healthy spot be found ? This property has a large commodi ous building erected on it, which could easily be converted into the required hospital, and it is, I believe, at present on the market. Further 'owards Waiuku thore is another excellent site on the education reserve, which also would suit both plsces Thore are many more, but these two just appeal to me at once Now, with both Waiuku and Pukekohe urging their claims, the probability is that, as is usual in such cases, the Hospital Board will take this as an excuse for shelving* the question. But if the people of Waiuku and Pukekohe would agree to meet each other half way there seems no doubt that their wish«s would be met, and a hospital estab lished iu the county that would serve a very much increased area than it' confined to any one of the two places 1 trust this matter will be taken up by the recent deputations when the members of the Hospital boar 1 visit the district Yours, etc., ri M ELVILIi CRISPE " Te Mahoe," Mauku, March 25, 1919.
