DISTRICT NEWS.
OTAHUHU. OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Otahufcu Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Present—The Mayor {Mr A. McDonald), Crs J. Brady, H. J. Hall, B. Todd, and T. Clements, and the Town Clerk (Mr W. J. Dionison.) . -V. MISDELLAXEOUS. An application was received from Mr W. Heid, hair-dresser, of Great South road, for permission to shift his present building back 30ft, to enable him to build a brick structure in front thereof.—The matter was referred to the Public Service committee, in conjunction with the inspector, for a report at the nest meeting. The Council accoided its suppoit to a resolution passed by the Devonport Borough Council, urging upon the Government the advisability of repatriating all alien prisoners The turncock (Mr W F. Bennett) wrote asking for an increase of pay, and in comparing his position with that of other employees of the Council he claimed that he was the poorest paid of any.—Cr Clements moved, and Cr Hall seconded, that an increase of five per cent be made, similar to that granted to the general labourers.—This was agreed to. Anting out of complaints made at the previous meeting as to overhanging hedges and noxious weeds, the foreman presented a report, giving the namee of several owners of property who were neglecting their duties under the by-laws —lt was resolved to serve the defaulters with notices. The report of the Legal and Finance committee was submitted and adopted The receipts from January 22nd to March 10th on the General Account totalled £1530 14s on the Cemetery Account £25 ss, and on the Pa'k Account £3 15s. The balances to date were as follows: - District Fund Account (debit) £2688 10* 4 ; Cemetery Account (credit) £49 7* lOd ; Park Account (credit) £661 19s Bd, and Domain Account (credit) £33 l*9d. Accounts to the amount of £760 9a 5d were passed fur payment. OTAHUHU MAYORALTY. mb. Mcdonald again standing. Towards the close of the proceedings at last night's meeting of the Otahuha Borough Council a unanimous request was made to the Mayor (Mr A. McDonald) by the Councillors in attendance for him to accept nomination for a further term of office. The subject was introduced by Cr Todd, who stated that the manner in which Mr McDonald had discharged his duties entitled him to rely upon the rapport of the community if he was agreeable to accept another term of office Or Todd referred to the pleasure experienced by Councillors in working under Mr McDonald's leadership and he particularly paid tribute to the arduous work performed by Mr McDonald during the influenza epidemic. Other Councillors spoke ia a similar strain. In reply, Mr McDonald thanked the members for their expressions of good-will. He staled that had the request been made to him six weeks ago he would probably have refused to accept nomination for reel* ction. However, since it was the unanimous wish of the Courcil for him to retain office he felt constrained to giv»* his answer in the affirmative. Mr McDonald expressed his appreciation of the whole-hearted way iu which the members of the Council had assisted him and he h'.ped that >ll tfte retiring Councillors would re-election and would he. J absence of rain, was referred to in a report pregtmted by the pumping engineer to the Borough Council la* ironing. He stated '
that the water-bed had fallen twelve inches", and that if a further fall of six inches took place he would not be able to guarantee a supply being given to the residents. He recommended the purchase of another engine, to enable a pipe to be driven down to the necessary depth to ensure a continuance of the supply. It was resolved to carry out the Engineer's recommendation, the Mayor, the Town Clerk, and the Engineer being delegated with the necessary authority to take action.
The Otihuhu Sports Club ate to hold another gathering on Saturday of next week and nominations for events will close next Tuesday evening. Particulars are advertised in this issue.
