RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL

An ordinary meeting of the Raglan County Council was held at Raglan on Tuesday last when there were present:—Crs C. Johnstone (chairman), Crawford, Otway, Rawlinson, Seavilland Swann. AUCTIONEERS' LICENSES Auctioneers' licenses (one each) were issued by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited and Messrs Dalgety and Co. Surprise was expressed by the chairman and Cr Otway that the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company had not taken out a license with the Raglan County. Cr Otway stated that they should have been the first company to have done so, instead of which they were the last. He referred to the fact that they did a considerable amount of business in the County and the stock for their sales travelled over the County roads. He was surprised that a company which prided itself upon its business aptitude had acted in such an unbusiness like manner. Cr Otway's sentiments were endorsed by the other councillors.

ESTIMATES AND REALITY The Public Works Department wrote re the bridge over the Waikato River at Ngaruawahia, that it was proposed to proceed with the construction of the approaches, etc, and that the Council's portion of the cost would he £36 5s It asked that this amouit be lodged to the public account, and the work would then be proceeded with. Councillors commented upon the fact that whereas the original estimate for the bridge was under £7OOO, it had cost over £IO,OOO. " It was decided to pay the amount asked, and at the same time express the hope that it would be the, last of the "extras."
