PAPAKURA.

PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held on Monday evening, the members present being Messrs E. D. McLennan (chairman), T. D. Campbell, S. Evanp, and D. W. Jones with the clerk (Mr Harold Wilson). IN'FLCEXZA EPIDEMIC Before commencing the business of the evening the Chairman referred to the influenza epidemic. He spoke in appreciate terms of those who had laboured in combating the scourge in the district Mr Jones proposed " (1) That the Board should express its sincere sympathy with those residents of the Town district and surrounding districts who had been bereaved in the epidemic; (2) That the Board should record its appreciation of the efforts of those who had so nobly assisted in fighting the epidemic, particularv Dr Brookfield for his unremitting attention to the sick, night and day; Mr Campbell, for his daily visitations and generous assistance throughout; the Clerk (Mr Harold Wilson) upon whose shoulders the whole of the clerical work fell; the Rev W. C. Wood and Mr W. E. Webb for their efforts in connection with the equipping and fitting up of the hospital; and Messrs Cole, Currie, Buller and McVeigh for their untiring labours on behalf of the sufferers ; (3) That the Board should place on record its most hearty appreciation of the skilfal services of Sister Froude and her assistants, paid and unpaid, for unselfish and self-sacrificing devotion in the caring of the sick; and(4) That the Board should gratefully thank all those who so generously provided food, fruit, and delicacies for the use of the sick and financial assistance for the needy." Mr Jones mentioned that as superintendent in charge of the temporary hospital he keenly appreciated the ready help that had been extended to him on all sides, which he thought spoke well for the good-fellowship of the town.

Mr Campbell seconded the motion, and on his suggestion it was incorporated in the resolution that the Board should express its thanks to Mr Jones for the part he had played in instituting the hospital, and in his management of the same; and also should thank the railway employees, especially Messrs Osborne and Edgar, for their help in various ways. The Chairman, in supporting the resolution, expressed his personal thanks to the Rev. W C. Wood for having taken control of tha hospital during Mr Jones' illness, and he also made feeling reference to the death of Mrs Whittingham, saying she had come forward and had volunteered her services when it was extremely difficult to obtain skilful assistance, and in making the supreme sacrifice she had given her life for others.

Mr Evans endorsed the Chairman's remarks, and mentioned that the district was also indebted to Mrs Watson, whose house had been converted into one of the temporary hospitals. The resolution was then agreed to. PLUNKET ROAD. An application by Mr C. J. Brown for permission to fence off a portion of Plunket road was left in the hands of Messrs Jones and Campbell. RAILWAY FACILITIES. Mr T. Clements waited on the Board and asked for support to petitions prepared for presentation to the Ministers of Railways and of Public Works advocating improvements of the railway service and early completion of the duplication of the line. The Board passed a resolution in sympathy with the objects mentioned. STRAYING CATTLE. Complaints were received of the nuisance caused by cattle wandering on the public roads, and it was decided to pursue a more vigorous course therewith by securing the appointment of a Ranger who could devote more time to his duties than the present occupant of the position could do. CHAIRMAN'S RESIGNATION.

Mr McLennan tendered bis resignation as Chairman of the Board, explaining that he found it impossible to devote adequate time to the ever increasing business of the Board. The resignation was accepted with regret, and Mr Jones was appointed acting-Chairman pending the appointment of a permanent Chairman being made at the next meeting. SANITARY MATTERS. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the Board on Wednesday next to deal with a report of the Sanitary Committee. CEMETERY RESERVE. Messrs Jones and Campbell were appointed as a sub-committee to arrange for improvements to the cemetery reserve. FORTNIGHTLY MEETINGS ADVOCATED. Mr Evans gave notice that at the next meeting he would move that the Board should meet fortnightly instead of monthly as now. WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Works Committe3 recommended that Mr Clarke be informed that the Board does not see its way clear to open and form the portion of Victoria street west fronting his allotment (No. 82, section XI. 1 at present; That Mr L. J. Walker be granted ;ho use of the road between Jots 138 and 148 section xi., and the cemetery; and that Mr Dalton be granted the use of the portion of the same road between lot 139 and the cemetery. In both cases the rental to be 2s 6d per annum, subject to the usual conditions; and That Mr West be informed that the Board is prepared to fill in the drain in front of his property in Settlement road providing Mr West is prepared to pay half the cost of the pipes required and to find the labour necessary for carrying out the work on the same conditions as the work carried out three years ago. The report was adopted.

FINANCE The Clerk reported that the expenditure on the general account had amounted to £149 14s > s d in October, and £64 17a 8d in November, the receipts for the fame periods being £l3l Is 19d and £23 7s 8d respectively. He added that on November 30th there was a debit balance on the genaral account of £536 10s ,10d. The report was adopted, and accounts totalling £123 9s were passed for payment.

At the meeting of the Papakura Town Board on Monday, it was reported that the number of patients that had received hospital treatment at Papakura was 71 (37 males and 34 females), 27 being residents of the Town Board district, 30 of Franklin County and 13 of Manukau Oounty. Further, it was stated that 27 patients had been discharged, 12 had died, two had been removed to the Auckland Hospital, leaving 30 in the hospital that day. The hospital is to be closed to-morrow and any patients in hand will be removed to the Auckland Public Hospital.
