PAPAKURA.
The influenza epidemic now seems o be on the decline in the Papakura listrict, thanks to the energetic neasures of the local organisation in marge of afiairs. As previously nentioned, a loyal band of workers, leaded by the Vicar (the Bey. W. J. Wood), instituted relief measures >n their own initiative, but official recognition of their efforts has since been forthcoming from the Actingdhief Health Officer (Dr. Frengley) in the way of powers being vested in them to carry out, at the expense of the Department, whatever steps they deem desirable. The area of the Papakura committee's operations includes Drury, Kama Rama, Hunua, Manurewa, etc. As recorded in our last issue, three temporary hospitals Bxist in the township, Dr. BrookGeld acting as medical officer. Yesterday 49 patients were beiDg treated at the hospitals, but very few new cases are now arising. A certificated nurse, in the person oi Nurs< Arthur, arrived in Papakura on Wednesday by instructions of the Health Department, to act as adviser to the local Committee in the administration of the hospitals. Although tho greater number of patients consist of member* of the male sex the more recent ioclude a larger proportion both of women and children than previously. It may also be mentioned that patients from the country have greatly outnumbered those from the township. Two additional deaths have taken place at the hospitals. Mr R. Wood, of Manurewa, succumbed on Tuesday, and a baby girl, named Betty Cicely Brown, whose mother had died a few days previously, passed away on Wednesday. There was also another fatal case on Wednesday, Mrs Bentley succumbing at her residence, after only a few hours' illness. Of the cases now in the hospitals, only one is in a precarious condition, the patient being a resident of Manurewa. The servides of two additional nurses from Auckland is being eagerly awaited, the present staff feeling the strain of their exertions. :
