MAUKU
WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC LEAGUE The Mauku branch of the above League held its monthly meeting on November 6th. Notwithstanding the poor attendance of members owing to the influenza epidemic an open air meeting was held and quite a lot of business was transacted. Mrs Outfield, knitting convenor, reported that the following articles had been handed in, viz.: Mrs Porter 4 pairs socks, Mrs Middleman 1 pair. Caps : Miss Porter 3, Miss Graham 1. Scarves : Miss Middlemas 2, Miss Hay 2. Mrs Gutry, sewing convenor, reported : Pyjamas—Mrs Brady 4 pairs; Mrs Pleydell 3 pairs ; Mesdames Wily, Bree, Stephenson, 2 pairs each ; Misses R. McAlpine and M. Gillon 2 pairs each ; Mrs Ashford 1 pair. Donations were also acknowledged as follows: Mrs Gutry £1 Is, Mrs Carpenter senr., 10s ; Mesdames Ferguson and J. Franklin 5s each ; sale of newspapers from Mauku school children, 7s. The book-bin is now completed and is being placed at the Mauku store. The President trusts that those who have magazines or books to spare will take this opportunity of passing them on to the soldiers, also cash donations are greatly needed so as to buy material for numbers of workers who have offered their services. Permission has been received from the Minister for Internal Affairs to postpone the Art Union till December 14th, when it is hoped the influenza will have been stamped out.
