PAPAKURA.
A special meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held last Monday evening for the purpose of comdering a report by Messrs Lockie Gannon and Macduff, the Board's consulting engineers, in regard to the proposed water supply for the town. Those present Were—Messrs 1) W. Jones (in ths chair), T. D. Campbell, 8. EvanSi arid Dr A W. P. Brookfield. The other members of the Board Messrs E D. McLennan, R. M, Gillespie, and W. N. Mcintosh—were abssni through illness. The Vepoit was read, but confederation thereof was deferred to a full meeting of the Board, as was also a report in connection with a proposal t« rosstiuct concrete roads on the main thoroughfares uuder the Ei-art's jurisdiction. Referring to the miinterjanne of thn main arterial roads, Mr T D Campbell s attd at last Monday's meeting of the Papakura Town 80-id that he notictd lrom the " Times" that Mr Lupton (chairman tf the Manurewa Town Board) was of opinion that the time was coming when the Government would be forced to take over ai.d maintain the main roads - Mr I) W. Jones rm.arked that he doubted if the Government would undertake to m-iiutain the main ai cial (Oiition of the cutitiy, duo to th* war burden, w.-u'd not permit of th-.-ru to do so for a few yfara at least To do th-> wh>le work satisfnctoiiiy, he thought the Board Would have to go in for a loan ; but, a3 he had said befoie the election, he was Dot in favour of a loan until there were pro-poets of an early ppace—"Aren't there prospects now ?'" queiit-d Dr Brookfield. The Doctor went on to say that he would not support the raising of a loan unless the Government (if it took over the control of the main arterial roads'} agreed, upon taking over eontro', to pay its share of the loan. "We can get sufficient water from the Hunua falls to snpply Papakura, Manurewa, and Drury," said Mr D. W. Jones at last Monday's meeting of the Papakura Town Board.
The plain and fancy dress masquerade ball held in the Picture Hall, Papakura. on Friday evening last was an unqualified success, notwithstanding the inclement weather experienced, and the prevailing epidemic of irfluenz*. There were 45 couples present, the majority being attired in fancy costumes. Excellent music was supplied by Meredith's (Auckland) orchestra, and the floor was in capital condition. Miss Carpenter (as "Granny ") was awarded the prize for the best sustained character, while Mr F. McKain (as " Uncle Sam") secured the judges' verdict in the men's class. Mes-srs Harold Wilson and W. McFarlane officiated as M's.C A sumptuous s pDf-r was partaken of, and credit for this is du-* to the energetic ladies' committee A most pleasant function concluded at 3a m As a result of the ball, the funds of the Returned Soldiers' Association was substantially augmented.
