DISTRICT NEWS.

MERCER. WAIKATO RIVER BOARD The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waikato River Board took place at Mercer on Saturday last. Present, Messrs A.G.C. Glass (chairman), M. Gallery, P. Henry, and T. S. P. Pendergrast with the Clerk (Mr Hallett). Mr R. F Bollard wrote acknowledging the receipt of the Board's application for a grant to develop the Mangatawhiri River, which he stated he had handed to the Minister for Lands, urging him to favonrably consider the request. Upon receipt of a reply from the Minister, he said, he would notify the Board of the result.—lt was decided to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Bollard for his action. The Clerk of the Aka Aka Drainage Board expressed his Board's thanks and appreciation of the River Board's kindness in furnishing valuable information and assistance which he assured them was greatly appreciated. His Board, he added, cordially reciprocated the friendly spirit and co- operation shown and trusted that in future their relations would be most harmonious.

The chairman, Mr Henry and the Clerk were instructed to carry out matters regarding a petition presented by Mr Henry in favour of a sub-division of the existing Ohine-wai-Rangiriri sub-division, the same to be carried into effect as soon as possible. It was reported that the launch " Waitoa " had been brought up the river to Mercer for repairs. The Clerk, Engineer and Mr Gallery were deputed to inspect the same and to have the necessary repairs carried out. *

Mr H. W. Matthews, as the representative of the Rangiriri ratepayers on the Board, tendered his resignation with a stipulation that it be accepted.—On the motion of Mr Henry, seconded by the chairman, it was decided to ask Mr Matthews to attend the next meeting and to give an explanation of his decision. It was arranged to hold a special meeting of the Board for the purpose of considering the re-classifiation of lands.

It was decided to make application to Parliament during the [•resent session for a grant of about £2500 for the purpose of dredging and cutting willows in the Pokeno, Awaroa, Maramaru, Opuntia, Whangamarino and Whangape creeks. Accounts amounting to £l2 were approved and passed for payment.
