PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening last. Present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason), andCrs G. Armstrong, R. Bilkey, F. J. Morrow, A. P. Daysh, A. B. Barter, J. Patterson, J. T. Stembridge and D. R. Hamilton, with the Town Clerk (Mr J. F. Deane). An application for a billiard saloonkeeper's license was received from Mr H. C. Beynolds and was granted. Application for a building permit was made by Mrs M. Crum, to erect a three-roomed concrete cottage on the old showground site. The permit was granted subject to the specifications meeting with the approval of the Building Inspector. Complaint was made by a firm of Auckland solicitors on behalf of Mr J. Bellhouse, of Beresford street, as to storm water running on to and damaging his property.—The Foreman was instructed to attend to the matter and to put in the necessary pipes to remedy the defect. The construction of a public convenience in Pukekohe's main street was suggested by Cr Barter but it was decided to take no action until a drainage scheme was under consideration. Cr A. B. Barter was appointed as a delegate to represent the Council at a conference of the Employers' Association in connection with the new demands made by the Labourers' Union.-It was resolved to renew membership with the Auckland Provincial Employers' Association and Cr Barter was asked to endeavour to have the Council exempted from the Labourers' Award. Permission was granted Mr B. H. Forbes, of Franklin Koad, to erect a fence above his house towards the rubbish tip. He also drew the Council's attention to the fact that the drain below the tip was being filled up with tins and rubbish and the Foreman was instructed to have the matter attended to. It was decided to make a donation of £2O towards the Tribute to France land. Accounts amounting to £609 13s 3d were approved and passed for payment.

The question of compiling a Borough Roll of Honour in memory of the Pukekohe soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice was introduced by Cr Barter and was left to Ors Barter, Stembridge and Patterson to deal with. It was decided to forward a letter of congratulation to Miss Webster, upon the honour conferred on her by the King of having been made a member of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her activities in patriotic movements.
