AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTION
Education BoarcTsProposals At a meeting of the executive committee of the Franklin A. and P. Society held on September 20 th, a circular from the Technical Branch of the Education Board was received, stating that the Board was desirous of encouraging the senior pupils of its schools to take an active part in school garden and agricultural science work and was willing to assist the Association by making a contribution towards the prize-monies awarded at the annual show for school garden classes.
The following were suggested as being suitable classes, viz, (a) best school garden in the district, (b) best collection of flowers, fruit, vegetables, etc. from school garden, (c) bast note book for work of full previous year in agriculture or nature study or dairy science, (d) collection of weeds, useful grasses, useless or harmful grasses, (e) milk testing competitions, (f) classes for best vegetables grown in school garden, (g) home garden competition. Frizes to be awarded for the best home garden, size not exceeding (say) 220 square feet, by pupil from any school, (h) best essay on any subject dealing with schco' garden, agriculture, or dairy science. The Board added that it must be understood that the Board would not provide the whole of the prize money for such classes, but would deal with each application seperately, and would make a reasonable contribution if considered desirable. It was asked that applications for donations from the Board should be accompanied by a list of classes (with amount of prize money) to be provided at the annual show. After discussion the committee decided to support the scheme and the secretary was instructed to call a conference of the Head Masters of the surrounding schools to meet the Instructor of Technical Education at Pukekohe to arrange the details. The Society decided to vote £lO towards the proposed classes, and also to give all the children of any school which made six entries in the above classes a free pass into the show.
